I am sad to say my lunch was a disappointment at best. We were seated and left without menus. After a lengthy wait our drink order was taken and the menus were given. The place probably has more charm at night but in the light of day it is clearly in need of an update and cleaning. We ordered an overpriced olive and feta appetizer. 8.50 for a few bites of feta with so much bitter purple onion it was hard to get past. My Greek salad was half lettuce core. Really? Let's at least get the salad right. I ordered chicken gyro which was cooked well but there was so much sauce and onion on it, it refused to stay in the pita and gave me halitosis for days. The guy I was with took one bite of Pastitsio and said awful. He barely ate it. Frankly I was embarrassed. Overpriced lack luster food. Won't be back. I'll take my 38.00 elsewhere. It was an expensive meal and I did not walk away feeling good about spending the money. What a waste in this economy.

Oh what a night! 6 of us went there last night, (Friday night) and we had such a great time. Atmosphere: Loud but in a wonderfully fun way. Dim lighting. Pianist and saxophone player. Great fun music. Fun Greek songs plus a diverse selection of music. Such a unique place. There was even a really friendly older Greek man with an authentic Greek accent who seemed to be a father or grandfather and/or the owner of the place. *live music *breaking plates *belly dancing (live beautiful belly dancer who even gave a short lesson on the dance floor) *small dance floor *flaming cheese Server: Friendly. Honest (She told us from the start that she had 7 tables). Accommodating (Technically the policy is "no separate checks" but she told us she was willing to do it if we wanted) Competent (She knew the menu front to back and had great recommendations) Another nice sidenote about her: She let us know right away that she was not going to rush us because she wanted us to really enjoy our night. FOOD (can't forget the food): The saganaki (flaming cheese) was not only fun but delicious. We ended up placing THREE orders. Like I mentioned, the server had great suggestions. She said she wasn't even a beer drinker, but she was able to recommend different beers for all of us that we all enjoyed. She recommended the spring leg of lamb (house favorite) to us, and now I'm recommending it to you. GET THE LEG OF LAMB! My friend and her friend both had chicken dishes (broiled chicken and the kabob). Both of them said that they had never had chicken that moist and tasty. I'd have to say that I rarely have lamb, but if I wasn't full of saganaki and pita bread, I would have licked my plate clean! And pretty much all of the entrees come with the house salad which has a some kind of creamy vinaigrette that we all loved. They sell it at the restaurant, and I already regret not buying it. Price: Since it was basically dinner and a show, the cost was definitely worth it, but it was probably a little too high to go there more than once or twice a month. We probably ended up spending approximately &40 per person which included saganaki, a beer, house, an entree, and the great show for the whole night. [Almost forgot to add: Coming from Chicago, where we have a nicely-sized Greek town, I have never been to a restaurant like this, with such a fun laid back atmosphere) SAGANAKI, BELLY DANCING, LEG OF LAMB, GO THERE!

I really wanted to like this local, family-owned greek joint that's right down the street from my house... but I just didn't. For what we payed, the food was weak and the service was poor. They were busy on a Thursday night, but our server was nowhere to be found for most of the evening! Food took forever and was mediocre for the price. For $15-20 plates, I expect a little more than some thinly sliced gyro meat and some under-seasoned chicken kabobs. I have heard that this place has traditional greek entertainment and a belly dancer on weekends, and perhaps this entertainment aspect is factored into the price. The BF and I did get to see a four-year-old girl break a plate for her birthday! She was petrified, probably frightened by the Neil-Diamond-covering guitar player, though he was my favorite part of the evening. (Yes, I mean this.) Don't think I'll be back any time soon, though.

I had the "Greek pizza", which is probably not the best dish to order. But, it was the only vegetarian lunch special. I was with a group of three others and we ordered take-out from the bar. While we waited 20 minutes for our food the staff was very helpful and friendly. They carried a good selection of Dreek beers, and we were happy to try one while we waited. The salad was great, especially the dressing. I noticed, walking out the door, that they sell their salad dressing in bottles. The next time I visit I will be sure to buy a bottle. The pizza was "okay", nothing spectacular but the ingredients we nice and fresh. I did not like the marinated vegetables that came with the meal. My friends spoke highly of their gyros. I look forward to revisiting and enjoying some non-vegetarian options.

I had my mind made up on a one-star rating a few times during my visit to Tassos, but they just worked so hard at making things right. We had a reservation-just a party of two-and had to wait 45 minutes for our table to be ready. As frustrated as I was, the host (I think Tasso's son) kept checking our table status and offering us free drinks, lots of free drinks. I'm pretty easily bought by free drinks, so I could overlook the wait here. We were seated and met with the second bummer of the night, our waiter. He was old, crabby, and clearly didn't want to be there. He actually only made two trips to our table during the night,the second of which he spilled salad dressing on me-everyone makes mistakes, but he was unapologetic. Tasso himself came to deliver food, clear plates, offer drinks, and bring the check. All while Pappou Grumpypants avoided us like the plague. The food was very good and enough to bring me back. Tasso and his son kept checking in with us and between that attention, the free drinks, and the bottle of salad dressing they sent us home with, I'm ready to give them another try.

for greek food, not too shabby. spanokopita was nice and hot... gyro plate was tasty and the meat was tender and not burned. i thought the pita was so-so, and it would have been nice to have a bit of hummus included on the gyro plate, rather than just the tzaziki. great little salad that came with the dinner... the dressing with the feta was fantastic. my friend had the super combination was seemed like a nice way to try three things at once. a macaroni dish, mousaka, and gyro. i didn't particularly care for the macaroni, as it was flavored with cinnamon. service was so-so and it was a slow night. $2 domestic bottles on thursday nights was a nice surprise though.

Tassos is an awesome time warp of American perceptions of Greek culture. From the cheesy grandpa who takes your picture, to the plate tossing, and the keyboard guy whipping out the toons you are transported to another time. I feel the need to don a polyester flowered mumu whenever I eat there and complain about the ships captain. The Mediterranean cruise feel exudes from the decor, menu, and staff. Is it the best Greek food you will ever have? Probably if you only travel to KC. From a well traveled baseline, it is ok food, a bit pricey, but the ambiance is amazing. It is hilarious, and great entertainment if you just want something different and a culture icon of KC. Go for the food, but stay for the show.

My husband and I have visited Tasso's twice now and really enjoyed the experience. We enjoyed five courses that were elegantly prepared, tasy and good temperature. While enjoying the live-music and belly dancer, the fast-paced and energetic environment prevented much audible or comprehensive conversation...not your quiet romantic dinner experience. The booths and vinyl table coverings add to the cheap surroundings but overall the restaurant is clean. The Greek salad was my favorite! Watch your check. From reading other reviews, I see that this is an issue at this restaurant. We had to wait about 20 min. for our check and then wait another 20 minutes for the correction to be made. Opa!

My first time in Tassos in a very very long time, I had the broiled chicken, it came with rice, green beans and pita bread, very generous portions, I loved it! My friend had the Pastitio, I had a taste and it was like lasagna, very good as well. There was a man singing, he was funny when he paused between songs. I heard breaking dishes and I thought it was an accident! Going here is so fun, we decided to go back to see the belly dancer! Oh and the service was great.

I was terribly disappointed in the attitude of the staff at Tassos. As a matter of fact, the grumpy old man at the front desk was so rude that we literally left prior to being seated. Let's not forget to mention the fact that there is ZERO parking!!! It's a shame that Tasso's doesn't have more competition in town as they would quckly be put out of business due to poor customer service. I can find good entertainment elsewhere!!!

Blah . . . . . . Overrated and outdated. That's all I can say about this place. Eating area is way too dark. Food is pricier than other Greek counterparts in town and the portion sizes leave much to desire. I've only gone here a few times and each time it's been against my will. I just can't give this place anymore stars when Kc has such an abundance of great Greek/Mediterranean places. Give it a shot but keep expectations low.

This restaurant experience tops my personal list as WORST EVER! It still makes me cringe. We arrived with a very large group, including elderly people and infants. The atmosphere is quite overwhelming if you don't know what to expect. It's crowded, loud and you certainly cannot hear over the "entertainment." We were actually seated promptly but that's where any shred of good service ended. At our first introduction to our waiter, I noticed he had a major attitude. First, he seemed annoyed that we weren't ready to order right away. About 20 minutes after arriving, we noticed the lights dimmed and it started to get progressively hot (mind you it was a 100+ degree day). It also got very smoky in the dining room, the smoke detectors were actually going off but we couldn't hear them over the noise. Our waiter became more scarce, the water never got refilled, 2.5 hours passed and our food had yet to arrive. No one had informed us that there had actually been a kitchen fire, which blew a fuse, hence the lack of lighting, A/C, ventilation and food. When the food did come, it was sporadic with 2-3 people getting their plates at a time. Two members of our party never received their dinner, one had to substitute because they ran out of gyro meat. They tried to deliver the last meal around 10:45pm, 2:45 after we arrived. It was refused, naturally, as everyone else had already eaten and we were just over the whole experience at this point. The waiter tried to push back saying "there's no lights in the kitchen, of course it's going to take a while." We would have told him earlier to forget about it but never saw him. Upon asking to speak to the manager, the waiter didn't verbally acknowlege the request, just walked away. About 10 minutes later, a very frenzied man approached our table. After explaining to him the issues we experienced, he was not apologetic as would be expected, but proceeded to tell our table, "I DON'T CARE, I DON'T NEED YOUR BUSINESS." That was certainly the icing on the cake. As a consolation they agreed to discount our bill. Getting the checks and paying took another 30+ minutes. We were the last remaining customers at this point. So from start to finish it was an awful experience. Given the difficulties in the kitchen they should have shut down the restaurant or at the very least communicated with the tables the situation. Water refills in a hot, smoky dining room would have been nice too. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!

They call it a restaurant, and yes they serve food, but I feel it would be better served if it was called an event space, a party place, that happens to serve food too! I wouldn't say they have great food (more 2 stars) but they do provide a great place for a good time (4 stars). The belly dancer is gorgeous and extremely nice and makes everyone feel comfortable even if pulled onto the dance floor. It's hard to knock Neil Diamond being played on a synthesizer while plates are being broken and blue ouzo shots are being poured. Go for a good time not for a great meal.

I really love Tasso's. The food is excellent, IMHO. I recommend the saganaki (flaming cheese which I always mispronounce as "Nagasaki," oops) and the spanakopita as apps. I like the pastitsio (Greek "lasagna") for an entree, but I truly like everything I have had there. I looooove the Gyro salad for lunch. Excellent place for a big group get-together/celebration. They are closed Sunday, which we found out the hard way. Of course you have the belly dancer (select evenings) who encourages group participation (even if it is to advertise her private belly-dancing lessons), you get to break plates (for $1, I think?) and you can go home with a commemorative Polaroid to remember it all by. DRAWBACK: I hate to say this, but you do need to double-check your bill. I have been twice with groups where a staff member has added items to our bill we did not order nor consume. I hope it was just a coincidence : / but I am afraid they are banking on you tipping back enough ouzo you won't notice.

I went for Happy Hour with a friend. The staff was very friendly and helpful since I hadn't been there before. It was early so we missed the excitement I had heard went on in this place although they were ready to offer us some shots! There was a guy playing and singing, which was a bit loud and it was hard for us to chat. The salad had one of the best greek dressings I had tasted. I ordered an eggplant dish that was incredible. It was baked to perfection. I still don't know what the topping was - it looked like bread but it was soft and had the consistently of meringue. Can't wait to go back closer to the weekend and a bit later at night to witness the craziness. Ok, yes, I will probably participate! This would be a good place for a large party as the dining room was huge and tables everywhere just wanting to be pushed together.

You've got to rate this place differently than just a restaurant. We happened on it totally by accident and had no idea what we were in for lol. Plate smashing, live music ,belly dancing and general mayhem. Food was good,service was spotty,but who really cares when there's so much else going on. So if you are looking for a quiet romantic time with exceptional food and service by all means go somewhere else. If you are looking for something completely off the wall fun where the food and service are secondary but not horrible by any means then give it a shot. Salad dressing is exceptional though.

We had our sixth anniversary dinner at Tasso's. Had a raucous, entertaining time with excellent food. (The restaurant even bought us a shot of ouzo to celebrate.) If you're in the mood for belly dancing, breaking dishes, laughter, irreverent entertainment and wonderful food, you should head over to Tasso's. Be warned, however, service can be a bit hit-or-miss. But have a shot of ouzo and roll with it.

I like Greek philosophy, or say I do when I want to impress people. I like Greek beer, but really who makes bad beer? I like Greek food, and for this reason, my wife and I haven't been for a while. Even though we live only a few blocks North of here. The food is about what I would expect from a mall food court. My calamari literally dripped with grease. I was born and raised in America, and have a dangerous love for grease, but this food made my stomach hurt before I left the restaurant. Spanicopita was good, but so is the stuff I get at Target. At a restaurant, I want to be blown away, not just satisfied. The prices here are a joke considering the food. They have the nerve to sell their "House" dressing at a premium price. If I wanted to pay $7 for a jar of Italian dressing, I would go to Whole Foods. There used to be a guy that would come around, in a suit that wasn't hip twenty years ago when he bought it, and ask if you wanted your picture taken with his Polaroid camera. If you said yes, he'd snap a photo, then he would walk away, and return with the pic in some cheese ball paperboard folded card. Then he would charge you five bucks. Thanks...? The only redeeming thing about this place was the singer. This dude played a mean guitar. He reminded me of Dick Dale, with a voice like Neil Diamond. We brought my wife's mom here and along with her Chicago born Greek boyfriend, and she thought that the guy was lip syncing to some Neil Diamond CD or something. He was good, and had a good sense of humor to boot. The plate breaking was cool, but I like drinking and breaking stuff anywhere, I don't need to pay premium prices to experience this. Just ask my friend Matt, I broke all of his dishes, and I mean all of them, and I didn't pay him a dime. I am sad that this place isn't better. It seems like it was really good at some point then they just got lazy, and gave up on trying. I love me some Greek food, and that is exactly why I don't eat here.

I love Greek food like some people love Italian food. One of my very good friends' family own a Greek restaurant in Omaha and I basically compare every other food experience to what I expect when I go there. Tasso's was not good. I cannot complain about the service, but we were there early on a Tuesday night so of course I wasn't expecting any dancing and plate smashing. I was just very disappointed with my meal. The pastitio was bad, just bad. It also had a red sauce on top which I have never, ever seen served on the dish. The rice wasn't cooked! It was almost completely hard. Who screws up rice? I won't be returning.

Nothing special. They had clearly redecorated recently as the new carpet smell radiated through the room. I am Greek and heard the Greeks talking about customers, which I did not like. The food was not bad and the service was good, though. The only reason I won't give better than 3 is because of the fact that there was not much food to each order, and the menu was very blah. I was just visiting this area so I don't know of other Greek places, but if you need a gyro, it was not that bad!

Well I have read all the other reviews and it seems some of you are simply not getting it. This place has been around FOREVER! If you are looking for ambiance and modern greek hookah chic well no wonder you were dissapointed! This place is about family, it's about a Greek family who has been making AWESOME food for what now about 40 years? It looks like a greek family LOVES this place and all their memories festoon the walls! And you know.....IT'S AWESOME! What matters MUCH more than any decor ever could is...the food! The food here is near perfect! Listen to me when I tell you I am a plus sized girl....obviously I have not been vested in eating salads....but their salads bathed in that homeade dressing are so delicious. They taste like sunlight and sea salt....OMG that homeade greek dressing is the best I have ever had ever ever ever. If you do not take some home (because they sell it there) you are a damned fool. The gyros platter was amazing....it's boring I know but when it's done right it tells you a lot. It was just perfect and delicious....the rice was so good it was almost a religious experience. Try the hummus (as if you wouldnt) Plated beautifully...and served with warm tender pita....so fresh the little air pockets that became browner than the rest of the pita are still crisp from the clay oven. I took my boyfriend for his birthday and we spent about 100.00...but we feasted like a king and queen and I do not regret it one bit. Try this restaurant....embrace the family photos that adorn the walls...and experience the food.

Oopa!!! Melissa and I decided that it was necessary to have lunch together and catch up and we also decided it was necessary that this lunch involved Greek cuisine. I had driven by Tassos on my way to Melissas new Waldo aboud, and was intrigued by their "Greek garden" outdoor decor. I am a sucker for outdoor sidewalk dining(it seems so metropolitan). We sat inside on a random late afternoon. The interior was well decorated and our waitress was incredibly attentive. I ordered a gyros and a diet coke. Our service was rapid, and the food was delicious. My beef was tender and the tetziki sauce was the perfect cool compliment to the warm flatbread. We both enjoyed salads along with the meal and there was a delicious homemade dressing that is also sold at Tassos. Melissa and I lingered to discuss important gossip:) and our waitress was not pushy nor impatient. Overall the food was great and the atmosphere was a splendid taste of Greece.

Time passed and Tasso's dropped off my restaurant radar until Groupon offered their deal of the day and I bought it. The food was excellent and the waiter was really good. We left him a really nice tip and he came over to thank us for it as we were leaving. We did go early around 5 o'clock on a Thursday evening and avoided the crowd that was arriving when we left. The portions were plentiful so I ate Tasso's from a "to go" box for a couple of days afterwards. It was still excellent. Price wise...not a place I could afford on a regular basis without a Groupon, but it was worth the money paid. I also bought a jar of their salad dressing for home use. Since this was a week night dinner there was no wild and crazy belly dancing, plate breaking, or Ouzo pouring. I've been there on those nights and its a different place when that starts. While that is fun this trip was just for a nice Greek dinner and it didn't disappointment.

I think I've gotten the schwarma plate each time I've been and always been happy with it. I've shared the hummus plate as well and I feel like I've tried the dolmas. All good good good. I highly recommend this place.

Let me give a disclaimer by saying I am not a fan of Greek food. But my husband is, and we had a Groupon, so we decided to try this place. We order the lamb plate for 17.95 and the Gyro plate for 14.00. The lamb plate was good, but the gyro plate was very salty. The dinners came with a small salad, which was very good. Although the portion size was adequate, I thought it was on the shy side in for the cost. Service was not great, but not the worst either.

This place is an experience in and of itself. Show up on a typical Friday night and you get quality entertainment as much as you get great food. The bellydancer is great fun, the food is absolutely delicious and the music is fun and uplifting. My favorite is the lamb chops, but I have tried most of the menu and have not had one thing on the menu that I did not like. And, that is saying a lot because I am a picky eater. My entire family loves eating there and begs to go back as often as I will take them.

I want to go back and get the Saganaki. It smelled so good when it went by our table. We tried a sample of dips with pita bread. Really good, but the pita bread was not as good as I was hoping. We have eaten at Aladdin's on 39th, and their pita is the best I have ever had. Back to Tasso's. We will go back, as there are many things we wanted to try. The atmosphere was great, the food was good, the staff was friendly.
Maybe I just don't care for Greek cuisine. The atmosphere was cheesy, and the food was blah. (Note: I did go during the lunch hour; and I hear it is much more fun after dark.)

If you want great Greek food this is the place for sure. The best in KC! The Dolmathes are my fav for sure. The Greek salad and dressing are fantastic. The Kabobs are great as well. Skrodalia is a garlic dip as an appetizer is serve with hot pita bread. To be honest it doesn't get much better then that stuff. It is a fun time when you go there for dinner. Plus they have a belly dancer some nights and who doesn't like that one?

I am indifferent about Tasso's. I don't love it and I didn't hate it. There are a series of events that happened that swayed my opinion. ~First off, the waitress told my friend and I that if we were on a date we wouldn't be able to talk to each other because it gets really loud in the restaurant. She told us that in about an hour is was going to get like that and just a fair warning to us. I kind of felt the need to keep running my mouth to my friend because our talking time was limited. Ha. ~Second, we were swindled. A cute older man came up to us and was complimenting us on how beautiful of a couple we were, assuming that we were a couple. The man had is polyester pants up to his chest, he was what I would love my grandpa to look like! He wanted to take our picture with his camera but at the time he couldn't get it to work. He came back about 10 minutes later and insisted on still taking the picture. Another 10 minutes passed and he came back with the picture in a card that had Tasso's logo on the front. He complimented us some more and then asked us for $5 to pay for the picture. I just looked at my friend and we could just read each others minds! So I coughed up the five bucks because I couldn't say no to the cute old man. ~Third, the food was over priced for quality and portion size. I ordered a gyro meat plate and the meat was dry compared to what I am used to. It still tasted fine and the taziki sauce was good. I prefer food at other mediterranean restaurants I have been to more. ~Fourth, they also tried to sell us roses and we asked for our check which didn't come until one of the managers tried to get us to order another beer. We declined because we were ready to go and had been ready, the waitress came by again and asked us if we were ready for our check. Yes! We are ready because we already asked you 10 minutes ago! Ugh! Ok so on a positive note: This place is great for large families. They have a dance floor and a disco ball in the middle of the restaurant. They let you break plates for three dollars. Awesome. Some nights they have a belly dancer. I guess I would go back just for the atmosphere and some drinks. I might pass on the food though.

If you're like me, the mixed reviews here have made you wary about whether you should try this place or not. I decided to take the risk and suggested Tasso's as the locale for my dear friend's birthday dinner. 1) DO make a reservation! It's a fun place for large groups too. Plan to get there by about 7:30 or later since it gets lively at about 8pm. 2) DON'T go overboard ordering apps and drinks because this place is too expensive! (an average entree is about $17 before tax and tip) 3) If you do want to order an app and an entree, I suggest splitting both to make it more affordable (our bill for three entrees, no drinks/no apps/no dessert, was $68 with tax & tip). The guy playing the guitar, singing, and cracking jokes was pretty entertaining. You can break plates for $3 (kind of a rip off), and the belly dancing gets going at about 8:30pm (on Saturdays at least). It's a very entertaining experience. Yes, it is loud, and it did take a while to get our menus...but all in all, I'd say it was a positive experience (as long as you follow my advice above).

I called in a reservation for 4, but still had to wait about twenty minutes. Given, they were packed! Also it's a small but very popular restaurant. I honestly think the doorman forgot about us or lost us in the crowd of people stuffed in the foyer. Also, there wasn't much of a place to sit while we waited. The food was pretty good, good portions, I didn't care too much for my meal, but it was a personal taste preference. I think the other members of my party enjoyed theirs. Our appetizer was great, it came with hummus, baba ganoush, tatziki and a garlic potato dip. We couldn't really figure out which dip was which, so it would have been nice if our waitress would have explained it. She was super busy and couldn't spend much time with us, so I understand...that's on the management for not staffing enough people to keep up with the weekend volume. The food isn't really the highlight to this location...it's all about the entertainment! Weekend evenings are blast! Coupled with belly-dancers, games, prizes, plate breaking and dance lessons :) It's really loud, so don't plan on dinner conversation during the weekend. Another gem joint thanks to DDD! De ore is fun and definitely Greek. The advice was top shelf excellent! Great menu full of authentic Greek dishes and fair prices. The portions are ample but not ridiculous. The plates are well balanced and presents nicely as well. The only down side I noticed was the annoying musician. Not this is just me but the place is a restaurant not a musical comedy club. I could have been happy with his act if he turned it down and just played background music. His banter especially acknowledging when people were leaving wasn't cool with me. Equally he would finish a song and want nobody was applauding. Besides the live music (which to se people this would be a plus) this place was great and worth a visit.

I used a Groupon here for lunch with a friend. They did allow the Groupon if we ordered dinner entrees which was understandable. Our waiter was friendly. The wall decor was fun even though it was kitchey. I didn't care for the vinyl table clothes nor the dated metal and vinyl chairs. Real linens would have made a difference as well as wooden and/or cloth seats. I ordered the moussaka. The salad that preceded the entree was a nondescript garden salad with one small olive on a bed of head lettuce, grated carrots, and shredded purple cabbage. I generally like eggplant but this dish was complete mush without much flavor at all. I felt like I was eating flavorless baby food. The green beans were good and fresh, not overcooked. The rice tasted like it was from a box with questionable packet flavorings. The pita bread was ok and I scooped up some tzatziki sauce off my friend's plate to dip the bread in, which was fine. For the price (close to $20 per entree) I would not do dinner here again and at this point, I'll not return to try any lunch dishes either. If I really need baklava, I'll get it up at the city market from a vendor.

I have been to Tassos three times. Two out of three times its been great . (We had a bad experience one time due to a untrained waitress) we always get the flaming cheese and hummas for appetizers. We usually Get chicken and steak shish kabobs which are also very good. A good waiter or waitress is key to having a fun experience at Tassos. Also the band maybe too loud for some. It's a little expensive but you are also paying for entertainment. If you are going just for "greek" food , go to Mr. Gyros.
This was my first visit here and food was just mediocre nothing to amazing write home about..maybe I'll be more adventurous and try something other than kabobs next time!! I do have to say the flaming cheese appetizer was very yummy!!! I loved the atmosphere...a little quirky weird yet it was very fun and there's were several groups celebrating birthdays so that made it even more fun!!! The belly dancer although a seasoned older lady was adorable and very entertaining, if you think there are multiple dancer nope there was just one, but like I said she was great!! I do have to say this is not a place to go if you want to visit as its quit loud. I do look forward to going back!!!

Why do people give this place anything less than 5 stars? We LOVE going to Tasso's. Every time we go, we have a great time. The atmosphere is so fun--think "Big Fat Greek Wedding": Greek flags all over the place, Greek god statues for sale by the bathroom. I love it! The live music is fun; the guy has a good voice and hilarious dry sense of humor. The food--we love! So flavorful. Everything on the menu seems to be delicious. My sister said it was the best moussaka she had ever had. I love the tzatziki dip--also the best I've ever had. My husband loves the lamb. People on yelp are griping about the pricing, but if you don't want to pay for quality food and a fun experience, you are welcome to go to the McDonald's across the street. And the service is good, too. Why are people complaining about that? We have never had bad service there. This last time, we had a really fun waiter named Doug who introduced himself as the best and fastest waiter in Kansas City. He did a good job and made us laugh to boot. The only thing that I would change is the volume of the music. My ears feel like I've been to a concert afterward. This place is fantastic both for the quality food and for the fun atmosphere. Go, and then go back again with some friends.

I'm okay with this place. My step mom loves it more than I do, but then again, she loves super upbeat restaurants that get the customers involved. I'm more of a I'm-going-to-eat-my-food-and-not-get-an-upset-Âstomach-because-I'm-jiggling-around-on-the-dance-Âfloor type person. There is entertainment, which consists of the owners doing dances that involve the men customers and then the women customers separate. You also get a free shot of absinthe on your birthday, which you take with everyone else whose birthday is that day, which is pretty cool. If I wasn't involved in the entertainment, I would have enjoyed it a little more, but I was dragged up to do belly dances, which they outfit you in the nice little wrap skirt. The men do a dance, too, but are outfitted with a weird hat and cane. My then-boyfriend did it, we broke up. (Not because of this, but almost, just because I realized how weird he is. :P Joking.) The food was pretty good, not GREAT or swoon-worthy, but they did have a really great cheese-dip appetizer. I'm unsure what it was, but my parents ordered it and it was delicious. Now, I'm lactose-intolerant, but I would handle the repercussions for this dish any day. Pretty damn good. This place has a fun atmosphere and great owners/entertainers with fine food. I'm okay with this place, probably wouldn't go out of my way for it, but I'm sure there are people out there who like this sort of stuff! Have fun! Good luck!

I have enjoyed their food. It is wonderful, but I won't be going there any time soon. Our office gets meals catered a lot and Tasso's has always been the office favorite until recently. One coworker was eating the roasted chicken with green peppers and found a very large, cooked cockroach. The person at the office that ordered from them promptly called to report it. Whomever they spoke to was rude, explaining the roach could have gotten in the (completely sealed) package at any time on the way to our office, saying that it definitely did not come from their restaurant. I mean, I get that most restaurants are going to have roaches, there isn't any hope for it, but to come off on the rudely defensive immediately, instead of, "oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! Let us compensate you somehow!" is just in my opinion, no way to run a business.

Based solely on the food, I'd give this two stars. I had the fillet kabob, which was tender as you would expect for a fillet, but lacked any seasoning whatsoever. Others in the group had the moussaka and gyro. I thought the lack of comment from the others said more than anything. The sides were pointless. The service - there were a large number. of wait staff and they were running everywhere, but they just didn't seem to accomplish actual service. Towards the end of the two hour meal we began strategically interacting with the waitress (e.g. order two drinks at once). Excruciating. Atmosphere was an atrocity exhibition. There were many drunken people throwing plates. Shards of plates went flying everywhere including our meals, hair and skin. There is a danger factor to be considered. Surreal.

Friendly staff... Very Greek looking decor. However the salad I got with my meal tasted like it was in the freezer. The cucumber was frozen as well as the salad. I like Tasso's. It's a fun, neighborhood place full of boisterous Greeks with a very casual (though maybe a bit cafeteria-ish) atmosphere. The music, belly dancers, and plate smashing are all fun. The food here is pretty tasty. I really like their lamb chops, pita, and gyro meat, in particular. Everything else is typically done well and fairly tasty. Quality-wise, I'd say it's on par with Aladdin Cafe. The menus are a bit different, but the two are reasonably comparable Mediterranean restaurants. Service is mediocre, but that's not a huge concern to me. Where things go a bit south is the pricing. $20 a plate can buy you one hell of a meal in Kansas City, and while the food is tasty, it's not worth the cost. Again, Aladdin is roughly the same quality of Mediterranean food, but it's about 60% of the cost. For that reason, I'd advise being wary of heading to Tasso's. If you just really want the uppity Greek atmosphere along with your meal, fire away. Otherwise, there are better options at this price point and in this style of cuisine. 4 stars for food, 1.5 for pricing, and anywhere from 3-5 for atmosphere, depending on when you're there.

First visit. We arrived about 5:30 and place was almost empty. Had to wait a couple of minutes before being seated. Hummus was very salty. Gyro meat was also very salty. Service was slow. There are a few menu items that you would normally expect rice and veggies with that are specifically called out to not come with rice and veggies, which is odd. Finally, on the menu it states if you have a reservation each party on the res must purchase an entree.

In a nutshell: poor service, outrageous prices for what you get, and just too much sensory overloading during their business evenings, which apparently happen on Saturday. The quality of the food was so-so, and clearly not worth the value of the ticket. I doubt we'll ever go again, in spite of how much I try to support local businesses.

Tassos is ok, not great, but just ok. Our waiter was extremely anxious to get our order. But once we placed the order he was nonexistent. The little starter salad came with the gyro plate. The gyro meat was good, not overly seasoned but good. The pita was fresh. The tzaiki didn't have the pop off seasonings I'm used to. Again, it was just good. I can see why it is popular with large groups and families. It is loud with conversations of people trying to talk over the overly loud music playing. The evening I was here it wasn't too full but there were several tables occupied wth large groups. Like I said, everything I had was just good. There weren't stand outs. I might go again if I was with a larger group on a Saturday night for the entertainment. But I'm not planning to go out of my way in the near future.

Food was good, service not. I have lived in KC all my life and never been here before. I've heard raving reviews but I didn't find it that great. However, I think maybe I went at the wrong time. I went by myself on a Tues night at 6pm. Nothing special going on, just three tables occupied. I did see an older man walking around but he didn't speak to me. It was not busy but the service was very slow. I didn't feel she was enthusiastic about taking my order and she took forever to bring me my check even though hardly anyone in the restaurant. She appeared to be the only one working other than someone in the back kitchen making food. They have large screen TV's broadcasting images of Greece. If it weren't for this I would have been so so bored waiting for the waitress. The prices... oh my. I about fell over when I saw the prices. I ordered a sm coke, the gyro only which came with small salad. The gyro was not a plate, it was gyro wrap only. This all came to $15 plus tip. Apparently that was their cheapest on the menu. It was very good but not worth the price. It is an older bldg so it may not seem clean but I'm sure it is. I'm sure this place is good for parties or special occasions but it's pricey.

It's really hard to write a review of Tasso's, because I'm in two places about it, having been a number of times in a number of different situations over the years. If you go on a weekend as part of a big group, you're going to have a good time. There's belly dancing, old guys with horns, ouzo, plates breaking, lining up to kiss birthday celebrants. It's just a fun time. The food is good, the people are friendly and everyone is having fun. If you go on a weeknight, maybe just two or four of you, it's a totally different vibe. Quiet. Service is a little slow and inconsistent, which you don't notice as much in a big group. And the food is still good, but holy cow, it's expensive. So, plan accordingly, and for the experience you want. Kansas City has a dearth of full-on Greek restaurants, so if that's what you're looking for, you don't have much to choose from. The food is worth the trip if you're craving Greek, but the whole experience might not be exactly what you're looking for.

This is hands down my favorite restaurant in the city. In the 15 years I've lived here this place has hardly changed and I absolutely love it for this. Why is this place so damn awesome you are wondering? Well I am going to tell you. 1. Tasso him self walking around during dinner, talking Greek into a mic that is connected to a PA. He gets the crowd in the restaurant worked up and soon everyone is raising their drinks and shouting "Opa". He also likes to get everyone drinking Ouzo shots. 2. The band. There is a 2 person band in there Th-Sat. The horn player has changed over the years, but the Neil Diamond incarnate that is the singer/keyboardist/guitar player has not. Not only does this man sound like the God that is Neil Diamond himself, but he cracks jokes throughout the dinner service about the patrons themselves. 3. Breaking Plates. For $3 you can purchase a plate and then turn around and throw it down on the dance floor, breaking it to pieces. All in the name of Good Luck. Tasso himself is known to make it rain plates at times to get people interested. 4. Belly Dancing. Now sure, the belly dancer isn't a 20 yr old hottie. But there is something fun in watching her dance around in her traditional greek garb and clanking finger cymbals together for 30 min that just gets you going. Typically she will bring guests out on to the dance floor for impromptu lessons as well. 5. The Food. This is why you go to a restaurant right? If Greek cuisine is what you want, there is no better. Also, be prepared to eat as the portions are large. This is the only restaurant in the city I have sat in for 2+ hours, spent $100 on a dinner for two, and not felt like I was cheated and got really crappy/slow service. If you haven't been here you must go. Do it on a Friday or Saturday night around 730 and go with friends. You won't regret it.

Great food...it was a packed Saturday night and the food eas great. Service was a little slow, but they did what they could. I don't think they thought it would be that busy. I had the filet ka bob that was incredibly tender. The table behind me let me try this lamb that looked like tiny pork chops that were incredible. We were fan of Tasso for 10 years until tonight. Food, atmosphere, and our talented belly dance lady are still always excellent but our server is so horrible. She missed our food and we waited for our check until the restaurant close. How can this ever be possible? She finally shown up when we were sat there as the last table. She went back in with our credit card for a big while. And yes, bad enough that another server need to be the one who hand our credit card back to us and said Thank you. With this kind of service and auto charge tips. Speechless .. Good luck with your server Tasso. Never again ....
This place has an amazing atmosphere, we were there on a Saturday night. The band was great, but they sat us about 3 feet from the microphone. I asked to be moved to a vacant table and they accommodated my request, although it did take about 15 extra minutes and they didn't have to clean up or move anyone from that table. I found that strange, almost like they had forgot I asked. I was concerned that the belly dancer was a little to much for the little ones I had with me but they seemed to have fun. The service was painfully slow, I had to walk up to the bar to get my own drink after the waiter was gone for another 15-20 minutes. The food was okay, I've had much much much better, but the atmosphere and fun made up for the lack of quality in the food. Most things seem pre-made as they couldn't accommodate many of my requests to have a little healthier options. All in all, this place is somewhere you have to try once, but then after that I don't see much need to go back...

I am giving Tasso's 4 stars merely because of the arrogant attitude of the owner, who has gone out of his way to yell at employees in the middle of the restaurant. Aside from this, the food is fantastic. The tour of Greece dip appetizer is my personal favorite. If you want to experience good Greek food in a quaint setting, come here during the weekdays. Otherwise, it is very crowded especially during belly dancing events but will be quite entertaining.

Tassos is....well if I had to put in one word, it'd be: weird! If i had three words? REALLY f'n weird! We went here Friday night with a large group for a friends birthday. Now granted, we had been doing some pre-gaming at somebody's apartment beforehand, so I was already feeling pretty good. But it's like the first 45 minutes at Tassos were a whirlwind of crazy times. I'm breaking plates on the floor, taking shots of ouzo while kissing a line full of women. Belly dancers! Ladies passing out roses! It's all just so crazy! So crazy that we barely even noticed that we didn't even get proper drinks in that first 45 minutes. JUST KIDDING. We totally noticed. Other things I noticed: -The side of the party closest to the kitchen got about twice as many drinks as those of us unfortunate enough to be on the far end. -The rack of lamb i ordered rare (to which the server said i was "an adventurer!) came out a decidedly un-adventurous medium well. After waiting almost an hour for it to be prepared, i sucked it up and ate it. The odd thing is, I'm usually such a stickler for service, but i really didn't care at all that it was ATROCIOUS. We still had a blast. Don't come for the food or the service. Come for the ridiculous atmosphere (alternatively described by my friends as both a 3rd rate Greek Booze Cruise and also "like every night is your weird Greek great-uncle's wedding!") and just have fun.

BEST GREEK FOOD IN KANSAS CITY Tasso's Greek Restaurant is one of Kansas City's hidden culinary gems. I have never had a bad meal there. I have eaten Greek food all over the world and this is world-class Greek food without a doubt. Not only do they make things like gyros and kabobs better than any other Greek restaurant in Kansas City, they have some of the best dishes I've only had at Tasso's. Last time I ate there, I had the Pastitio, a ground beef and macaroni and cheese casserole and it was AMAZING. I go there for lunch all the time and the staff is always so extremely nice and accommodating. I have also had them cater lunch to my office and they fed the entire office without a hitch. Everybody loved it. Tasso himself (must be nearing 80 years old) is one of Kansas City's true characters and has been there taking care of every customer that walks in the door almost every time I've eaten there. I love this guy. His son is just as much a character and one of the nicest, most genuine people I have ever met. It's a true family affair and the food is literally the best Greek food I have ever put in my mouth - that's why I keep going back.

I've ate Greek food...two or three times now, but this place is a blast. We went on a Saturday night and it was packed. KU was playing on the big screen, bachelorette parties galore, old and young, you name it, they were there. I had no idea what to order, so I got the sampler. I liked everything! Next time, I'll either get the sampler again or the gyro platter. Belly dancer was great, the two guys playing music were great, and breaking the plates...OPA! Such a good time, I'll be back for sure...with a driver or a taxi!

Hands down, one of the best group-dinner restaurants in the city, esp when it is packed on a Friday or Saturday night. Ask for John next time you go - he is Tasso's son, and the defacto owner/manager. He will buy you a shot of Ouzo, and off you go.... On the weekends, there is live music, and around 9, a live belly dance show and audience-participation portion. Pretty fun for first-timers or infrequent goers, certainly. It's even more fun when Tasso is there clapping along, breaking plates and yelling at people to getup and dance! :-)

The ambiance was awful, the service was mediocre and it was more expensive than it should have been. However, I must begrudgingly report, that the food was surprisingly good. We had the Gyro salad and the Chicken salad and they were both large and fresh. The feta was bountiful as well. I went to Tasso's with a Groupon and my 16-year-old son for my "birthday out" with him. I'd completely prepped him (having been there years ago) that it was a loud, boisterous place, that there would be plate-smashing and belly-dancing, and a raucous, lively evening would ensue...his first experience at a Greek restaurant would be unforgettable! What we got was nearly the opposite: a nearly-empty place when we arrived (granted, it was a Wednesday evening, but there were only a couple tables occupied). Nobody at the door, nobody to greet us, nobody to seat us...the place was so quiet you could hear a pin drop! I maneuvered my way through to the bar and kitchen, and finally found a snippy pigtailed waitress (hostess?) and simply asked, "are we supposed to seat ourselves or wait for someone?" She replied, "I was trying to get this take-out order...I'll seat you." OK then! Our waiter was excellent - he kept our glasses full and was quite knowledgeable about the menu for my inquisitive son. The food was warm and wonderful, if a bit slow to arrive. We had the hummus/pita appetizer; I had a gyro plate and my son had the "Greek lasagne" pastitio dish which he loved. Entertainment for the evening included some cheesy MIDI-type music (which, fortunately, did include "Zorba the Greek") played from a CD, followed by an excellent live guitar performance by a guy who's part lounge-singer. He did take the time to chat with us in between songs, and the small crowd did acknowledge his excellent musicianship and reasonable "background" volume. He salvaged the evening in terms of entertainment, which was good. But...no belly dancer, not a single plate smashed, no dancing, no handing out of roses, no real spirit or festive atmosphere, and a whole front-of-house with delicious looking Greek cookies but nobody to sell them -- left us hanging. I need to bring my son back again on a weekend evening, when hopefully things are a little more alive. As for this calm, delicious Wednesday evening, I'd give the food and waiter excellent marks, but probably a D- to the hostess and the way it felt like we were intruding on a silent evening by actually coming here for dinner. It sure wasn't the festive, hyper Tasso's I remember from a few years ago.

This place is AWFUL!!! I do not know how they have been in business for so long. 2 couples for dinner, squeezed in at a very small table. Ordered hummus which was mediocre at best, Holy Land's hummus blows theirs away. Also ordered their specialty flaming cheese. Big let down. Do not waste your money. It is just cheese that is set on fire so it is melted. Our waitress was great. Very helpful and friendly. We loved her. When she brought our dinners out she lost her balance and proceeded to dump an entire plate of food on my husbands lap. Accidents happen. He got cleaned up but the manager (or maybe owner??) proceeded to scream at the waitress just out of sight but not out of earshot. He berated her for 10 minutes! It was embarrassing for everyone. He did NOT however come by our table or offer us any thing for compensation, not even a free dessert. The food was okay, certainly not worth the trip from Jo Co. Holy Land is way better. Because we really like our waitress we didn't say anything the manager about not comping anything because he'd probably fire her. It was ridiculous! Needless to say we will NEVER be back.

It would be hard for me to give any Greek restaurant more than 3 stars, so this 3 star is probably like a 4 star... maybe. : ) To start, I like southern food of this type better. Like Israel, Palestine, etc. I like their hummus better and the spicing better. So, we just do the saganaki and Greek Super Combo. The Saganaki was good... but too much lemon. Don't let them squeeze the whole wedge on the plate if you are sensitive to lemon flavor. The combo had the following items: Tiropita... awesome mild feta in filo. My favorite thing here. Gyro meat.... about as good as anywhere. Tzatziki... excellent and my second favorite thing here. Mousaka... very good, and rich beyond measure. A great winter dish. Pastitio.... also very good and not too heavy handed on the cinnamon in the meat, which spoils this dish at some places. The pita was not so good. Papu's has pita down. The best. Period. So... I'd go back for a Tiropita for sure. Maybe Mousaka in the winter. They just put a patio with a nice pergola and lights out back. If you want to eat outside, as we did, it is very nice. Opa!

Dear Yelp fam, you know I only write when it's really amazingly good, or tragically bad. In this case I am proud to bring a KC local establishment to light. I had this at an office event which was catered by Tasso's a couple weeks ago and had to ask the secretary where she ordered from. Then on a quiet Tuesday we decided to stop in and try the chicken kabob and gyro first hand. It was FRIGGIN AMAZING. It is hard to glorify pita bread yes I know, but literally the best pita bread in. the. world. I am on a paleo diet or Mediterranean diet, so this was perfect (but I did splurge on the pita). If you like chicken you have to try the chicken kabob (must try). The chicken is so darn... moist (I hate that word) that you will take a bite out of it, and then look at it in awe. The gyro meat is tender but has that light char on the outside and when coupled with the white tzaziki (sp) sauce is off the charts. I've heard about people coming here for the atmosphere on the weekends (I did see a pile of Greek plates), but we came and enjoyed a casual weekday. Highly Reco!

We were there just before our reservation time and still had to wait behind the 4+ parties ahead of us), to the server (just clueless and scattered. We tried to flag him down several times when he walked right by the table and we had no luck, parts of our order were forgotten, don't even hope for any refills) to the slow, sloooow food that was not even mediocre.) Those are only a couple highlights. There was nothing good about this experience. You couldn't pay me to waste another night here. Gordon Ramsey would have a field day.

If you are visiting KC or you live here, and you have never experienced Tasso's..you must go. You will feel ilke you're lost when you get there...but worth the trip. Seriously, get authentic greek food and lots of it. Plus OUZO!!! and plenty of that as well. Not only will you get great food, but you will get entertainment, a belly dancer AND best of all, you get to BREAK DA PLATES!! yes, the entire restaurant as the opportunity to dance around the dance floor and smash plates into the ground. We have typically always gone with a group of people....but bring your party friends for a great evening. It is not just dinner out...it is entertainment you will remember for a long tim.

My son requested Greek food for his Birthday celebration, good choice. We ordered the special package which included an appetizer ( gyro meat, tzatziki sauce and pita),small Greek dinner salad, and your choice of any entree(5$ up charge for the Rack of lamb) for 20$. We had the Corinthian lamb chops, rack of lamb, Dolmathes, and the Chicken Kabob. The lamb was fabulous, tender flavorful, no gamy taste at all. This was the best lamb I've had anywhere. The show was fun, with free Uzo shots for those celebrating. The belly dancer was great fun, adding extra value to the meal.

We went on a Saturday night, with 7 adults and 2 children. We knew it would probably be loud and busy, but we weren't expecting what we walked into. They placed us at a back table, at first. Unfortunately, the door down the hall led outside to the "smoking" patio. 2 of our party are allergic, so the draft when smokers would walk into the restaurant was overwhelming. They moved us very quickly to the front of the restaurant. Which would have been fine, if the music hadn't been several decibels too loud. My ears are still ringing. I couldn't talk to the person across the table and good luck trying to speak to anyone further than 1 seat away from you. The service was OK. The prices are not worth it. The food was good, but not *that* good. $16 for a gyro plate (no rice, no veggies). I better have enough for lunch leftovers (or exceptional service), and neither was the case. The owner was very loud and obnoxious (seeming to berate many of the servers & the musicians). We left before the belly-dancer started, as we simply could not deal with the loud music any longer. Did I mention that my ears are still ringing? The negative trifecta of price, ambience, and quality is such that I will never go back.

Here I go with the Groupons again. Hey listen! I'm addicted and I've gotten such a lot of good deals from Groupons. I've never been to Tasso's before so this was going to be a treat. And, I had heard so many good things about it. So, we piled into the Caddy and trolled down Wornall at lightning speed because as usual, we were running a late dinner on a Saturday night. When we arrived, it didn't look overly crowded, just busy. When we got inside? It was noisy and raucous and loud and very, very busy. I thought they were having a private party and we did have to stand and wait an uncomfortably long period of time before someone finally noticed us and hailed a server to come greet us. I asked if they were having a private party and the server said they were not but it took him a moment to locate a good place for us to sit. It turned out to be a nice booth which had a good view for me but not my dining companion. When the belly dancer flounced out onto the stage, my dining companion and I were relieved that we were tucked a bit out of the way. I'm all for having a good time with the crowd and performers, etc., but tonight was supposed to be just a pleasant, tasty dinner of something unusual for the both of us. Listen, these people were getting up and shaking those booties on the dance floor and an older fellow was getting on a microphone and hollering stuff out to the crowd, kind of like at a Greek wedding. I thought it looked like a lot of fun. My dining companion became annoyed by the loudness and the commotion. Oh well, different strokes I guess. We ordered the package deal which was the Pikilia (appetizers) and a main course. The pikilia had gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, spanakopita and tiropita and pita bread. Their tzatziki sauce is the bomb! It is so creamy and flavorful with the fresh cucumber flavor. Just heaven! The gyro meat was nice and tasty but some of it was a bit dry. The spanakopita (spinach and feta wrapped in filo) and tiropita (feta wrapped in filo) were good. For dinner, I ordered the Super Combination which was Gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, pastitsio and pita served with onions and tomato. My dining companion ordered the Gryo Plate which was basically just more gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, pita bread, onions and tomato. All the food was good but the pastitsio was probably some of the best I've had in a while. It seems like Tasso's may make their own noodles but I'm not sure. The meat is delicately flavored with just a touch of cinnamon and other spices and topped with that custardy, creamy topping. Quite delightful! The service was not the best. I know it was because the place was busy and the servers were streteched thin but I think our server only came over the minimal number of times and it was always a very quick affair. He didn't even bother to present us with our bill. He sent someone else. That's not really a point of contention to me it's just one of those little things that kind of get your atteniton, you know? Nothing that would make me reconsider coming back or telling people something bad. There's nothing bad to tell about Tasso's. It's fun, it's cute, the food is good, the servers are hot, the belly dancer is cute and personable, everyone seemed nice. We will definitely be back.

Belly dancing? Plate breaking? Live music? Delicious food? Shenanigans? Count me in! This place was a BLAST! A group of my friends and I went here to celebrate my birthday! It was my second time ever at Tasso's and I had a great time on both occasions. To start off the evening we ordered the saganaki (flaming cheese), Tour of Greece appetizer sampler, and Greek wine. The waitress lit the cheese table side and the flames nearly hit the ceiling! Awesome! The belly dancer that performs at Tasso's has been there for years and also does shows at Caspian Bistro in OP. I wish I could move like that! After taking beginning belly dancing, I can barely even do a correct shimmy. For the entrees, my fiancee tried the vegetarian kabob and I ordered a Village Salad that contained huge blocks of feta cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, sprinkles of parsley, and an olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar dressing. Delicious! My non-vegetarian friends enjoyed their entrees as well and they were all huge. Before the waitress brought out our entrees, she gave us each a side salad. After the appetizers and salad we were already quite full. The waitress also insisted that I order a dessert since it was my birthday so I got the Greek custard. She brought it out with a lit candle which was a cute touch and didn't charge us for the dessert. If you're celebrating a special day here and you're shy...well tough it out! The emcee will call you on stage. I joined the other people celebrating their birthdays on stage and got kissed on the cheek by the lone birthday boy based upon the emcee's orders. When it was the girls' turn to kiss the boy, I politely declined and said I was engaged. Turns out he was too and his fiancee was filming and scowling in the background. LOL! Plates cost $3 each and they get people on stage to break them in unison. Ah massive destruction. What's not to love? In addition to plates, they also go around selling roses and take photos of each couple in an effort to hawk these items to you. I just wish more people had been on stage dancing. Toward the end of the night, I got tired of sitting and dragged my fiancee on the stage. We had fun being the lone couple dancing and showcasing our newfound swing dancing skills thanks to our dance lessons in preparation for the wedding. The lack of dancing soon changed when a group of girls hopped off from a party bus, swarmed the dance floor, and basically took over the whole restaurant. What I assume to be the bachelorette even got up on a table and started dancing with the original owner. I highly recommend Tasso's for a fun, unique experience! OOPA!

Couldn't wait to take my Greek family to this place when they were in town. We called ahead on New Year's Day to make a reservation - as we heard this place can get packed - and got there when it opened just to make sure we didn't have to stand in line forever. Not only were we the only people there at its opening, we were the only people for the bulk of our 2-hour visit. This was especially surprising because I have heard so much about how their entertainment and belly dancing is well paired with their food. Unfortunately we didn't see any of that. I was tempted to start throwing plates of my own by the end of the visit, as the whole encounter was just a little off. The service was pretty lame - especially weird since we were the only people there! The food was OK, though the bulk of my family said that Grandma makes it better. The saganaki (flaming cheese) was decent, though underwhelming. I got a Veggie Platter of sorts and couldn't believe how much I was charged for so little food. The Greek salad was boring and mute in taste. The baklava was MINIATURE compared to its price. The facility here is interesting, and judging from how much there were still cleaning up from the night before, I am sure it can promise a good time. I was getting sick of the looped Greek tourist DVD being played on the TV behind us. Wondering if I have to be a heavy drinker to really enjoy this place, because being with my Greek family in this Greek restaurant didn't seem true to the intention of the place.

I love to go to Tasso's even though I've never really had a GREAT time there. The food is good, but never spectacular, the prices are a little hefty for what you get and the pink ouzo they pass off on the american hicks is pretty awful. Still, if you come on a weekend night, there's always music and dancing and plate throwing, and mean old man Tasso yelling at everyone to clap. I'm sure in it's heyday this place was about as good as it gets. People now a days expect more. And like the other Greek places in KC, no seafood on the menu, which is so incredibly odd for a culture that lives on the mediterean sea. don't you think? I'll be going to greece next year, and from what I hear most of the big towns have restauraunts like this one, but with seafood on the menu. I will continue to go to Tasso's until something better comes along. I just love the place.

Very "Greek Family" atmosphere. Dance floor. 2-man band with backing tracks playing popular Greek, Jewish, and Middle-Eastern songs. Even threw in some 80's songs which was great. People dancing, smashing dishes. I mean, wow! Arrived without a reservation. Food was great, service was incredible. Just had an awesome time.

Went here for my father's birthday and we had SO MUCH FUN! Breaking plates, dancing, taking shots of ouzo- we didn't want to leave! I suggest the flaming cheese, which they set on fire at your table! I had the house favorite- lamb dish, which was very good. I would suggest going here. It's very loud and the belly dancer is a lot of fun too! It's like a wedding party haha! Outside looks very nice- they have a patio in front and back. Staff was all so friendly and helpful.

My (now ex) wife and I arrived at Tassos in Waldo on a recent Friday night promptly at five o'clock. We were not greeted, and generally felt we were inconveniencing the staff, that appeared to be getting ready for a large group. Other than our server, who was very professional and pleasant, the entire staff acted like they were awaiting their anti depressant shipment. What infuriated us most was the arrogant, dismissive attitude of the owner and manager (as idenified by our server). The food was not to the level of Mr. Gyros. A tremendous disappointment! I hope your experience is better than ours, but as I told the manager as we left: "We are sorry to have inconvenienced you by coming tonight...." I have NO idea how this place has the reputation that it does.

I have been meaning to visit this restaurant for YEARS, based on all the fun stories I'd heard my friends tell. Finally, it took a Groupon to get me through the front doors. I actually bought two Groupons so I could take a group of four. I was joined by my two teenage sons and my oldest son's girlfriend. I was pretty excited about introducing them to Greek cuisine with atmosphere to match. Unfortunately, we got nothing of the sort. We went on Friday night and, even though the place was not busy, the host asked us if we had a reservation. It had not dawned on me to make one so I asked if that was a problem. He said no. We were seated at a four top table on the upper level. Three full pitchers of ice tea sat on the railing next to our table and when my younger son was seated, he had to be very careful not to move. Otherwise, he could have easily knocked the pitchers off. I mentioned this to our server and he said "Well, I would appreciate it if you DIDN"T knock them off". I assured him that if one of them was knocked off, it would definitely be an accident and, to lighten the mood, I told him we'd just holler "Opa!" if we did. He did not find any humor in that nor did he offer to move the pitchers. My son's girlfriend is a vegetarian; she ordered the gyros plate but asked him to hold the meat. In a very condescending manner, he told her that there would be nothing on the plate if she did not have the meat. He could have easily asked her if she'd like more cucumber or tomatoes instead (it certainly wouldn't have been cost prohibitive to do that) but I guess that never dawned on him. I ordered the combo platter. About 15 minutes later, he walked by our table and said he couldn't remember what I had ordered! When we finally got our meals, I asked him which food was the pastitio. It was very dark and I couldn't tell what I was eating. He said "It's the one that you can visibly see the noodles" and walked off. About 5 minutes later, I realized my water glass had a rather big chip on the rim. Obviously I didn't want to cut my lip so I flagged him over to see if he would change the glass. He took it without a word and never brought me anything else to drink, including another glass of water. I was parched and finally had to ask another server to bring me another glass. The atmosphere left a lot to be desired. They had a terrible singer who played nothing but Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, and Kenny Rogers. Not exactly the belly dancing, plate breaking, Zorba's dance that I was looking forward to. Food was edible but certainly nothing to write home about. We were not offered desserts at all. Needless to say, we won't be back.

I am sad to say my lunch was a disappointment at best. We were seated and left without menus. After a lengthy wait our drink order was taken and the menus were given. The place probably has more charm at night but in the light of day it is clearly in need of an update and cleaning. We ordered an overpriced olive and feta appetizer. 8.50 for a few bites of feta with so much bitter purple onion it was hard to get past. My Greek salad was half lettuce core. Really? Let's at least get the salad right. I ordered chicken gyro which was cooked well but there was so much sauce and onion on it, it refused to stay in the pita and gave me halitosis for days. The guy I was with took one bite of Pastitsio and said awful. He barely ate it. Frankly I was embarrassed. Overpriced lack luster food. Won't be back. I'll take my 38.00 elsewhere. It was an expensive meal and I did not walk away feeling good about spending the money. What a waste in this economy.

Oh what a night! 6 of us went there last night, (Friday night) and we had such a great time. Atmosphere: Loud but in a wonderfully fun way. Dim lighting. Pianist and saxophone player. Great fun music. Fun Greek songs plus a diverse selection of music. Such a unique place. There was even a really friendly older Greek man with an authentic Greek accent who seemed to be a father or grandfather and/or the owner of the place. *live music *breaking plates *belly dancing (live beautiful belly dancer who even gave a short lesson on the dance floor) *small dance floor *flaming cheese Server: Friendly. Honest (She told us from the start that she had 7 tables). Accommodating (Technically the policy is "no separate checks" but she told us she was willing to do it if we wanted) Competent (She knew the menu front to back and had great recommendations) Another nice sidenote about her: She let us know right away that she was not going to rush us because she wanted us to really enjoy our night. FOOD (can't forget the food): The saganaki (flaming cheese) was not only fun but delicious. We ended up placing THREE orders. Like I mentioned, the server had great suggestions. She said she wasn't even a beer drinker, but she was able to recommend different beers for all of us that we all enjoyed. She recommended the spring leg of lamb (house favorite) to us, and now I'm recommending it to you. GET THE LEG OF LAMB! My friend and her friend both had chicken dishes (broiled chicken and the kabob). Both of them said that they had never had chicken that moist and tasty. I'd have to say that I rarely have lamb, but if I wasn't full of saganaki and pita bread, I would have licked my plate clean! And pretty much all of the entrees come with the house salad which has a some kind of creamy vinaigrette that we all loved. They sell it at the restaurant, and I already regret not buying it. Price: Since it was basically dinner and a show, the cost was definitely worth it, but it was probably a little too high to go there more than once or twice a month. We probably ended up spending approximately &40 per person which included saganaki, a beer, house, an entree, and the great show for the whole night. [Almost forgot to add: Coming from Chicago, where we have a nicely-sized Greek town, I have never been to a restaurant like this, with such a fun laid back atmosphere) SAGANAKI, BELLY DANCING, LEG OF LAMB, GO THERE!

I really wanted to like this local, family-owned greek joint that's right down the street from my house... but I just didn't. For what we payed, the food was weak and the service was poor. They were busy on a Thursday night, but our server was nowhere to be found for most of the evening! Food took forever and was mediocre for the price. For $15-20 plates, I expect a little more than some thinly sliced gyro meat and some under-seasoned chicken kabobs. I have heard that this place has traditional greek entertainment and a belly dancer on weekends, and perhaps this entertainment aspect is factored into the price. The BF and I did get to see a four-year-old girl break a plate for her birthday! She was petrified, probably frightened by the Neil-Diamond-covering guitar player, though he was my favorite part of the evening. (Yes, I mean this.) Don't think I'll be back any time soon, though.

I had the "Greek pizza", which is probably not the best dish to order. But, it was the only vegetarian lunch special. I was with a group of three others and we ordered take-out from the bar. While we waited 20 minutes for our food the staff was very helpful and friendly. They carried a good selection of Dreek beers, and we were happy to try one while we waited. The salad was great, especially the dressing. I noticed, walking out the door, that they sell their salad dressing in bottles. The next time I visit I will be sure to buy a bottle. The pizza was "okay", nothing spectacular but the ingredients we nice and fresh. I did not like the marinated vegetables that came with the meal. My friends spoke highly of their gyros. I look forward to revisiting and enjoying some non-vegetarian options.

I had my mind made up on a one-star rating a few times during my visit to Tassos, but they just worked so hard at making things right. We had a reservation-just a party of two-and had to wait 45 minutes for our table to be ready. As frustrated as I was, the host (I think Tasso's son) kept checking our table status and offering us free drinks, lots of free drinks. I'm pretty easily bought by free drinks, so I could overlook the wait here. We were seated and met with the second bummer of the night, our waiter. He was old, crabby, and clearly didn't want to be there. He actually only made two trips to our table during the night,the second of which he spilled salad dressing on me-everyone makes mistakes, but he was unapologetic. Tasso himself came to deliver food, clear plates, offer drinks, and bring the check. All while Pappou Grumpypants avoided us like the plague. The food was very good and enough to bring me back. Tasso and his son kept checking in with us and between that attention, the free drinks, and the bottle of salad dressing they sent us home with, I'm ready to give them another try.

for greek food, not too shabby. spanokopita was nice and hot... gyro plate was tasty and the meat was tender and not burned. i thought the pita was so-so, and it would have been nice to have a bit of hummus included on the gyro plate, rather than just the tzaziki. great little salad that came with the dinner... the dressing with the feta was fantastic. my friend had the super combination was seemed like a nice way to try three things at once. a macaroni dish, mousaka, and gyro. i didn't particularly care for the macaroni, as it was flavored with cinnamon. service was so-so and it was a slow night. $2 domestic bottles on thursday nights was a nice surprise though.

Tassos is an awesome time warp of American perceptions of Greek culture. From the cheesy grandpa who takes your picture, to the plate tossing, and the keyboard guy whipping out the toons you are transported to another time. I feel the need to don a polyester flowered mumu whenever I eat there and complain about the ships captain. The Mediterranean cruise feel exudes from the decor, menu, and staff. Is it the best Greek food you will ever have? Probably if you only travel to KC. From a well traveled baseline, it is ok food, a bit pricey, but the ambiance is amazing. It is hilarious, and great entertainment if you just want something different and a culture icon of KC. Go for the food, but stay for the show.

My husband and I have visited Tasso's twice now and really enjoyed the experience. We enjoyed five courses that were elegantly prepared, tasy and good temperature. While enjoying the live-music and belly dancer, the fast-paced and energetic environment prevented much audible or comprehensive conversation...not your quiet romantic dinner experience. The booths and vinyl table coverings add to the cheap surroundings but overall the restaurant is clean. The Greek salad was my favorite! Watch your check. From reading other reviews, I see that this is an issue at this restaurant. We had to wait about 20 min. for our check and then wait another 20 minutes for the correction to be made. Opa!

My first time in Tassos in a very very long time, I had the broiled chicken, it came with rice, green beans and pita bread, very generous portions, I loved it! My friend had the Pastitio, I had a taste and it was like lasagna, very good as well. There was a man singing, he was funny when he paused between songs. I heard breaking dishes and I thought it was an accident! Going here is so fun, we decided to go back to see the belly dancer! Oh and the service was great.

I was terribly disappointed in the attitude of the staff at Tassos. As a matter of fact, the grumpy old man at the front desk was so rude that we literally left prior to being seated. Let's not forget to mention the fact that there is ZERO parking!!! It's a shame that Tasso's doesn't have more competition in town as they would quckly be put out of business due to poor customer service. I can find good entertainment elsewhere!!!

Blah . . . . . . Overrated and outdated. That's all I can say about this place. Eating area is way too dark. Food is pricier than other Greek counterparts in town and the portion sizes leave much to desire. I've only gone here a few times and each time it's been against my will. I just can't give this place anymore stars when Kc has such an abundance of great Greek/Mediterranean places. Give it a shot but keep expectations low.

This restaurant experience tops my personal list as WORST EVER! It still makes me cringe. We arrived with a very large group, including elderly people and infants. The atmosphere is quite overwhelming if you don't know what to expect. It's crowded, loud and you certainly cannot hear over the "entertainment." We were actually seated promptly but that's where any shred of good service ended. At our first introduction to our waiter, I noticed he had a major attitude. First, he seemed annoyed that we weren't ready to order right away. About 20 minutes after arriving, we noticed the lights dimmed and it started to get progressively hot (mind you it was a 100+ degree day). It also got very smoky in the dining room, the smoke detectors were actually going off but we couldn't hear them over the noise. Our waiter became more scarce, the water never got refilled, 2.5 hours passed and our food had yet to arrive. No one had informed us that there had actually been a kitchen fire, which blew a fuse, hence the lack of lighting, A/C, ventilation and food. When the food did come, it was sporadic with 2-3 people getting their plates at a time. Two members of our party never received their dinner, one had to substitute because they ran out of gyro meat. They tried to deliver the last meal around 10:45pm, 2:45 after we arrived. It was refused, naturally, as everyone else had already eaten and we were just over the whole experience at this point. The waiter tried to push back saying "there's no lights in the kitchen, of course it's going to take a while." We would have told him earlier to forget about it but never saw him. Upon asking to speak to the manager, the waiter didn't verbally acknowlege the request, just walked away. About 10 minutes later, a very frenzied man approached our table. After explaining to him the issues we experienced, he was not apologetic as would be expected, but proceeded to tell our table, "I DON'T CARE, I DON'T NEED YOUR BUSINESS." That was certainly the icing on the cake. As a consolation they agreed to discount our bill. Getting the checks and paying took another 30+ minutes. We were the last remaining customers at this point. So from start to finish it was an awful experience. Given the difficulties in the kitchen they should have shut down the restaurant or at the very least communicated with the tables the situation. Water refills in a hot, smoky dining room would have been nice too. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!

This Greek restaurant has a fun atmosphere for entertaining...food is below average and very expensive..had the souvlaki plate and it was bland and too expensive....go for drinks only!!!

They call it a restaurant, and yes they serve food, but I feel it would be better served if it was called an event space, a party place, that happens to serve food too! I wouldn't say they have great food (more 2 stars) but they do provide a great place for a good time (4 stars). The belly dancer is gorgeous and extremely nice and makes everyone feel comfortable even if pulled onto the dance floor. It's hard to knock Neil Diamond being played on a synthesizer while plates are being broken and blue ouzo shots are being poured. Go for a good time not for a great meal.

I really love Tasso's. The food is excellent, IMHO. I recommend the saganaki (flaming cheese which I always mispronounce as "Nagasaki," oops) and the spanakopita as apps. I like the pastitsio (Greek "lasagna") for an entree, but I truly like everything I have had there. I looooove the Gyro salad for lunch. Excellent place for a big group get-together/celebration. They are closed Sunday, which we found out the hard way. Of course you have the belly dancer (select evenings) who encourages group participation (even if it is to advertise her private belly-dancing lessons), you get to break plates (for $1, I think?) and you can go home with a commemorative Polaroid to remember it all by. DRAWBACK: I hate to say this, but you do need to double-check your bill. I have been twice with groups where a staff member has added items to our bill we did not order nor consume. I hope it was just a coincidence : / but I am afraid they are banking on you tipping back enough ouzo you won't notice.

I went for Happy Hour with a friend. The staff was very friendly and helpful since I hadn't been there before. It was early so we missed the excitement I had heard went on in this place although they were ready to offer us some shots! There was a guy playing and singing, which was a bit loud and it was hard for us to chat. The salad had one of the best greek dressings I had tasted. I ordered an eggplant dish that was incredible. It was baked to perfection. I still don't know what the topping was - it looked like bread but it was soft and had the consistently of meringue. Can't wait to go back closer to the weekend and a bit later at night to witness the craziness. Ok, yes, I will probably participate! This would be a good place for a large party as the dining room was huge and tables everywhere just wanting to be pushed together.

You've got to rate this place differently than just a restaurant. We happened on it totally by accident and had no idea what we were in for lol. Plate smashing, live music ,belly dancing and general mayhem. Food was good,service was spotty,but who really cares when there's so much else going on. So if you are looking for a quiet romantic time with exceptional food and service by all means go somewhere else. If you are looking for something completely off the wall fun where the food and service are secondary but not horrible by any means then give it a shot. Salad dressing is exceptional though.

We had our sixth anniversary dinner at Tasso's. Had a raucous, entertaining time with excellent food. (The restaurant even bought us a shot of ouzo to celebrate.) If you're in the mood for belly dancing, breaking dishes, laughter, irreverent entertainment and wonderful food, you should head over to Tasso's. Be warned, however, service can be a bit hit-or-miss. But have a shot of ouzo and roll with it.

My only complaint was the belly dancer - she only danced one dance then wandered around collecting money. We had our money out and she totally snubbed us.... weird.... her loss - literally.

I like Greek philosophy, or say I do when I want to impress people. I like Greek beer, but really who makes bad beer? I like Greek food, and for this reason, my wife and I haven't been for a while. Even though we live only a few blocks North of here. The food is about what I would expect from a mall food court. My calamari literally dripped with grease. I was born and raised in America, and have a dangerous love for grease, but this food made my stomach hurt before I left the restaurant. Spanicopita was good, but so is the stuff I get at Target. At a restaurant, I want to be blown away, not just satisfied. The prices here are a joke considering the food. They have the nerve to sell their "House" dressing at a premium price. If I wanted to pay $7 for a jar of Italian dressing, I would go to Whole Foods. There used to be a guy that would come around, in a suit that wasn't hip twenty years ago when he bought it, and ask if you wanted your picture taken with his Polaroid camera. If you said yes, he'd snap a photo, then he would walk away, and return with the pic in some cheese ball paperboard folded card. Then he would charge you five bucks. Thanks...? The only redeeming thing about this place was the singer. This dude played a mean guitar. He reminded me of Dick Dale, with a voice like Neil Diamond. We brought my wife's mom here and along with her Chicago born Greek boyfriend, and she thought that the guy was lip syncing to some Neil Diamond CD or something. He was good, and had a good sense of humor to boot. The plate breaking was cool, but I like drinking and breaking stuff anywhere, I don't need to pay premium prices to experience this. Just ask my friend Matt, I broke all of his dishes, and I mean all of them, and I didn't pay him a dime. I am sad that this place isn't better. It seems like it was really good at some point then they just got lazy, and gave up on trying. I love me some Greek food, and that is exactly why I don't eat here.

I love Greek food like some people love Italian food. One of my very good friends' family own a Greek restaurant in Omaha and I basically compare every other food experience to what I expect when I go there. Tasso's was not good. I cannot complain about the service, but we were there early on a Tuesday night so of course I wasn't expecting any dancing and plate smashing. I was just very disappointed with my meal. The pastitio was bad, just bad. It also had a red sauce on top which I have never, ever seen served on the dish. The rice wasn't cooked! It was almost completely hard. Who screws up rice? I won't be returning.

Nothing special. They had clearly redecorated recently as the new carpet smell radiated through the room. I am Greek and heard the Greeks talking about customers, which I did not like. The food was not bad and the service was good, though. The only reason I won't give better than 3 is because of the fact that there was not much food to each order, and the menu was very blah. I was just visiting this area so I don't know of other Greek places, but if you need a gyro, it was not that bad!

Well I have read all the other reviews and it seems some of you are simply not getting it. This place has been around FOREVER! If you are looking for ambiance and modern greek hookah chic well no wonder you were dissapointed! This place is about family, it's about a Greek family who has been making AWESOME food for what now about 40 years? It looks like a greek family LOVES this place and all their memories festoon the walls! And you know.....IT'S AWESOME! What matters MUCH more than any decor ever could is...the food! The food here is near perfect! Listen to me when I tell you I am a plus sized girl....obviously I have not been vested in eating salads....but their salads bathed in that homeade dressing are so delicious. They taste like sunlight and sea salt....OMG that homeade greek dressing is the best I have ever had ever ever ever. If you do not take some home (because they sell it there) you are a damned fool. The gyros platter was amazing....it's boring I know but when it's done right it tells you a lot. It was just perfect and delicious....the rice was so good it was almost a religious experience. Try the hummus (as if you wouldnt) Plated beautifully...and served with warm tender pita....so fresh the little air pockets that became browner than the rest of the pita are still crisp from the clay oven. I took my boyfriend for his birthday and we spent about 100.00...but we feasted like a king and queen and I do not regret it one bit. Try this restaurant....embrace the family photos that adorn the walls...and experience the food.

Oopa!!! Melissa and I decided that it was necessary to have lunch together and catch up and we also decided it was necessary that this lunch involved Greek cuisine. I had driven by Tassos on my way to Melissas new Waldo aboud, and was intrigued by their "Greek garden" outdoor decor. I am a sucker for outdoor sidewalk dining(it seems so metropolitan). We sat inside on a random late afternoon. The interior was well decorated and our waitress was incredibly attentive. I ordered a gyros and a diet coke. Our service was rapid, and the food was delicious. My beef was tender and the tetziki sauce was the perfect cool compliment to the warm flatbread. We both enjoyed salads along with the meal and there was a delicious homemade dressing that is also sold at Tassos. Melissa and I lingered to discuss important gossip:) and our waitress was not pushy nor impatient. Overall the food was great and the atmosphere was a splendid taste of Greece.

Time passed and Tasso's dropped off my restaurant radar until Groupon offered their deal of the day and I bought it. The food was excellent and the waiter was really good. We left him a really nice tip and he came over to thank us for it as we were leaving. We did go early around 5 o'clock on a Thursday evening and avoided the crowd that was arriving when we left. The portions were plentiful so I ate Tasso's from a "to go" box for a couple of days afterwards. It was still excellent. Price wise...not a place I could afford on a regular basis without a Groupon, but it was worth the money paid. I also bought a jar of their salad dressing for home use. Since this was a week night dinner there was no wild and crazy belly dancing, plate breaking, or Ouzo pouring. I've been there on those nights and its a different place when that starts. While that is fun this trip was just for a nice Greek dinner and it didn't disappointment.

I have only been to Tasso's for lunch so this review is not for the crazy plate throwing madness this place has been come to be known for. Lunch has always been a good experience. The food is great. I think I've gotten the schwarma plate each time I've been and always been happy with it. I've shared the hummus plate as well and I feel like I've tried the dolmas. All good good good. I highly recommend this place.

Let me give a disclaimer by saying I am not a fan of Greek food. But my husband is, and we had a Groupon, so we decided to try this place. We order the lamb plate for 17.95 and the Gyro plate for 14.00. The lamb plate was good, but the gyro plate was very salty. The dinners came with a small salad, which was very good. Although the portion size was adequate, I thought it was on the shy side in for the cost. Service was not great, but not the worst either.

This place is an experience in and of itself. Show up on a typical Friday night and you get quality entertainment as much as you get great food. The bellydancer is great fun, the food is absolutely delicious and the music is fun and uplifting. My favorite is the lamb chops, but I have tried most of the menu and have not had one thing on the menu that I did not like. And, that is saying a lot because I am a picky eater. My entire family loves eating there and begs to go back as often as I will take them.

I want to go back and get the Saganaki. It smelled so good when it went by our table. We tried a sample of dips with pita bread. Really good, but the pita bread was not as good as I was hoping. We have eaten at Aladdin's on 39th, and their pita is the best I have ever had. Back to Tasso's. We will go back, as there are many things we wanted to try. The atmosphere was great, the food was good, the staff was friendly.

Between the never-ending road construction and friendly neighborhood serial rapists, the area is really pretty sleazy. I swore I would never go to Waldo, but last night I decided to make an exception. Thank goodness I did! What a cool place! My parents and I walked into this joint and immediately our senses were taken on a ride. A TV looping various shots of Greece, flashing blue lights on the ceiling, and an amazing vocalist/guitarist were all perfectly synchronized to instantly throw you into the electric atmosphere. We had made reservations and were seated right away and we got our menus as soon as we sat down. My father informed the waiter that we had never been to Tasso's before, implying that he wanted to know what Tasso's was all about or what the waiter recommended, and the waiter looked at us like a deer in the headlights. After his initial look of panic, he asked if my dad wanted to know what was good on the menu. Duh! The waiter then proceeded to basically read us the menu. Thank you, we aren't blind or illiterate. The waiter was a total dope, but after a quick look at the other employees it was pretty obvious that he was a son or a cousin or a brother of numerous other employees. Definitely a family owned and run restaurant. Not everyone in the family can be sharp I suppose. We got our drinks quickly, but the tea was disgusting. We complained and were not charged for our drinks. Our hot food came to us quickly and the portions were good sized. I ordered and recommend the super combination which consisted of gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, mousaka, pastitio, and pita bread for $16.95. And of course, my entrée had to be followed by some baklava. The dessert was delicious, but so small! Paying $4.50 for a dessert smaller than a Twinkie was a little disappointing. After finishing our meal, the nightly programs began. We weren't being rushed in the slightest so we stayed and listened to the music, twirled our napkins above our heads, shouted oopa about a dozen times, and watched the aged, muffin-topped belly dancer who was indubitably related to the restaurant employees. (According to the grapevine, the belly dancer used to be the owner's wife! Maybe it was her? I didn't ask.) All in all, Tasso's was a very pleasant experience. The good food and electric atmosphere make it criminal to not visit at least once.

If you want great Greek food this is the place for sure. The best in KC! The Dolmathes are my fav for sure. The Greek salad and dressing are fantastic. The Kabobs are great as well. Skrodalia is a garlic dip as an appetizer is serve with hot pita bread. To be honest it doesn't get much better then that stuff. It is a fun time when you go there for dinner. Plus they have a belly dancer some nights and who doesn't like that one?

I am indifferent about Tasso's. I don't love it and I didn't hate it. There are a series of events that happened that swayed my opinion. ~First off, the waitress told my friend and I that if we were on a date we wouldn't be able to talk to each other because it gets really loud in the restaurant. She told us that in about an hour is was going to get like that and just a fair warning to us. I kind of felt the need to keep running my mouth to my friend because our talking time was limited. Ha. ~Second, we were swindled. A cute older man came up to us and was complimenting us on how beautiful of a couple we were, assuming that we were a couple. The man had is polyester pants up to his chest, he was what I would love my grandpa to look like! He wanted to take our picture with his camera but at the time he couldn't get it to work. He came back about 10 minutes later and insisted on still taking the picture. Another 10 minutes passed and he came back with the picture in a card that had Tasso's logo on the front. He complimented us some more and then asked us for $5 to pay for the picture. I just looked at my friend and we could just read each others minds! So I coughed up the five bucks because I couldn't say no to the cute old man. ~Third, the food was over priced for quality and portion size. I ordered a gyro meat plate and the meat was dry compared to what I am used to. It still tasted fine and the taziki sauce was good. I prefer food at other mediterranean restaurants I have been to more. ~Fourth, they also tried to sell us roses and we asked for our check which didn't come until one of the managers tried to get us to order another beer. We declined because we were ready to go and had been ready, the waitress came by again and asked us if we were ready for our check. Yes! We are ready because we already asked you 10 minutes ago! Ugh! Ok so on a positive note: This place is great for large families. They have a dance floor and a disco ball in the middle of the restaurant. They let you break plates for three dollars. Awesome. Some nights they have a belly dancer. I guess I would go back just for the atmosphere and some drinks. I might pass on the food though.

If you're like me, the mixed reviews here have made you wary about whether you should try this place or not. I decided to take the risk and suggested Tasso's as the locale for my dear friend's birthday dinner. 1) DO make a reservation! It's a fun place for large groups too. Plan to get there by about 7:30 or later since it gets lively at about 8pm. 2) DON'T go overboard ordering apps and drinks because this place is too expensive! (an average entree is about $17 before tax and tip) 3) If you do want to order an app and an entree, I suggest splitting both to make it more affordable (our bill for three entrees, no drinks/no apps/no dessert, was $68 with tax & tip). The guy playing the guitar, singing, and cracking jokes was pretty entertaining. You can break plates for $3 (kind of a rip off), and the belly dancing gets going at about 8:30pm (on Saturdays at least). It's a very entertaining experience. Yes, it is loud, and it did take a while to get our menus...but all in all, I'd say it was a positive experience (as long as you follow my advice above).

I called in a reservation for 4, but still had to wait about twenty minutes. Given, they were packed! Also it's a small but very popular restaurant. I honestly think the doorman forgot about us or lost us in the crowd of people stuffed in the foyer. Also, there wasn't much of a place to sit while we waited. The food was pretty good, good portions, I didn't care too much for my meal, but it was a personal taste preference. I think the other members of my party enjoyed theirs. Our appetizer was great, it came with hummus, baba ganoush, tatziki and a garlic potato dip. We couldn't really figure out which dip was which, so it would have been nice if our waitress would have explained it. She was super busy and couldn't spend much time with us, so I understand...that's on the management for not staffing enough people to keep up with the weekend volume. The food isn't really the highlight to this location...it's all about the entertainment! Weekend evenings are blast! Coupled with belly-dancers, games, prizes, plate breaking and dance lessons :) It's really loud, so don't plan on dinner conversation during the weekend. All in all, we chose Tasso's to entertain our friends who were visiting KC for the weekend, they had a good time, so...it was worth it.

Another gem joint thanks to DDD! De ore is fun and definitely Greek. The advice was top shelf excellent! Great menu full of authentic Greek dishes and fair prices. The portions are ample but not ridiculous. The plates are well balanced and presents nicely as well. The only down side I noticed was the annoying musician. Not this is just me but the place is a restaurant not a musical comedy club. I could have been happy with his act if he turned it down and just played background music. His banter especially acknowledging when people were leaving wasn't cool with me. Equally he would finish a song and want nobody was applauding. Besides the live music (which to se people this would be a plus) this place was great and worth a visit.

I used a Groupon here for lunch with a friend. They did allow the Groupon if we ordered dinner entrees which was understandable. Our waiter was friendly. The wall decor was fun even though it was kitchey. I didn't care for the vinyl table clothes nor the dated metal and vinyl chairs. Real linens would have made a difference as well as wooden and/or cloth seats. I ordered the moussaka. The salad that preceded the entree was a nondescript garden salad with one small olive on a bed of head lettuce, grated carrots, and shredded purple cabbage. I generally like eggplant but this dish was complete mush without much flavor at all. I felt like I was eating flavorless baby food. The green beans were good and fresh, not overcooked. The rice tasted like it was from a box with questionable packet flavorings. The pita bread was ok and I scooped up some tzatziki sauce off my friend's plate to dip the bread in, which was fine. For the price (close to $20 per entree) I would not do dinner here again and at this point, I'll not return to try any lunch dishes either. If I really need baklava, I'll get it up at the city market from a vendor.

I have been to Tassos three times. Two out of three times its been great . (We had a bad experience one time due to a untrained waitress) we always get the flaming cheese and hummas for appetizers. We usually Get chicken and steak shish kabobs which are also very good. A good waiter or waitress is key to having a fun experience at Tassos. Also the band maybe too loud for some. It's a little expensive but you are also paying for entertainment. If you are going just for "greek" food , go to Mr. Gyros.

A few weeks ago we went to Tasso's on a busy prom night. We weren't dressed very well compared to everyone else so we decided to go somewhere else. A very nice man followed us out and invited us back in. He said not to worry because it was casual attire. The music was loud and live. They had a belly dancer and a saxophone player. It was pretty awesome. The food came out fast and it was amazing. My fiancé and his father got the Euro plate and I got the mushka? I think it was called. After we got boklava. It was warm and delicious. The server suggested the custard so we all shared that as well, which was interesting. We will definitely be back and we appreciated feeling welcome.

This was my first visit here and food was just mediocre nothing to amazing write home about..maybe I'll be more adventurous and try something other than kabobs next time!! I do have to say the flaming cheese appetizer was very yummy!!! I loved the atmosphere...a little quirky weird yet it was very fun and there's were several groups celebrating birthdays so that made it even more fun!!! The belly dancer although a seasoned older lady was adorable and very entertaining, if you think there are multiple dancer nope there was just one, but like I said she was great!! I do have to say this is not a place to go if you want to visit as its quit loud. I do look forward to going back!!!

Why do people give this place anything less than 5 stars? We LOVE going to Tasso's. Every time we go, we have a great time. The atmosphere is so fun--think "Big Fat Greek Wedding": Greek flags all over the place, Greek god statues for sale by the bathroom. I love it! The live music is fun; the guy has a good voice and hilarious dry sense of humor. The food--we love! So flavorful. Everything on the menu seems to be delicious. My sister said it was the best moussaka she had ever had. I love the tzatziki dip--also the best I've ever had. My husband loves the lamb. People on yelp are griping about the pricing, but if you don't want to pay for quality food and a fun experience, you are welcome to go to the McDonald's across the street. And the service is good, too. Why are people complaining about that? We have never had bad service there. This last time, we had a really fun waiter named Doug who introduced himself as the best and fastest waiter in Kansas City. He did a good job and made us laugh to boot. The only thing that I would change is the volume of the music. My ears feel like I've been to a concert afterward. This place is fantastic both for the quality food and for the fun atmosphere. Go, and then go back again with some friends.

I'm okay with this place. My step mom loves it more than I do, but then again, she loves super upbeat restaurants that get the customers involved. I'm more of a I'm-going-to-eat-my-food-and-not-get-an-upset-Âstomach-because-I'm-jiggling-around-on-the-dance-Âfloor type person. There is entertainment, which consists of the owners doing dances that involve the men customers and then the women customers separate. You also get a free shot of absinthe on your birthday, which you take with everyone else whose birthday is that day, which is pretty cool. If I wasn't involved in the entertainment, I would have enjoyed it a little more, but I was dragged up to do belly dances, which they outfit you in the nice little wrap skirt. The men do a dance, too, but are outfitted with a weird hat and cane. My then-boyfriend did it, we broke up. (Not because of this, but almost, just because I realized how weird he is. :P Joking.) The food was pretty good, not GREAT or swoon-worthy, but they did have a really great cheese-dip appetizer. I'm unsure what it was, but my parents ordered it and it was delicious. Now, I'm lactose-intolerant, but I would handle the repercussions for this dish any day. Pretty damn good. This place has a fun atmosphere and great owners/entertainers with fine food. I'm okay with this place, probably wouldn't go out of my way for it, but I'm sure there are people out there who like this sort of stuff! Have fun! Good luck!

Tassos is really fun and has a great atmosphere. I always have a great time coming here! The only issue may be that the music can be too loud for those who aren't use to the noise or have sensitive ears.

I have enjoyed their food. It is wonderful, but I won't be going there any time soon. Our office gets meals catered a lot and Tasso's has always been the office favorite until recently. One coworker was eating the roasted chicken with green peppers and found a very large, cooked cockroach. The person at the office that ordered from them promptly called to report it. Whomever they spoke to was rude, explaining the roach could have gotten in the (completely sealed) package at any time on the way to our office, saying that it definitely did not come from their restaurant. I mean, I get that most restaurants are going to have roaches, there isn't any hope for it, but to come off on the rudely defensive immediately, instead of, "oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! Let us compensate you somehow!" is just in my opinion, no way to run a business.

Based solely on the food, I'd give this two stars. I had the fillet kabob, which was tender as you would expect for a fillet, but lacked any seasoning whatsoever. Others in the group had the moussaka and gyro. I thought the lack of comment from the others said more than anything. The sides were pointless. The service - there were a large number. of wait staff and they were running everywhere, but they just didn't seem to accomplish actual service. Towards the end of the two hour meal we began strategically interacting with the waitress (e.g. order two drinks at once). Excruciating. Atmosphere was an atrocity exhibition. There were many drunken people throwing plates. Shards of plates went flying everywhere including our meals, hair and skin. There is a danger factor to be considered. Surreal.

Friendly staff... Very Greek looking decor. However the salad I got with my meal tasted like it was in the freezer. The cucumber was frozen as well as the salad. The waiter suggested the flaming cheese (I forget the official name) but it was pretty tasty and the waiter seemed to love serving it. Would come back and try the "meal deal" option. Cheers!

The owner, or the mean man at the front of the restaurant that makes fun of gays and blacks is a real turn off. Will never go back!! Were given a table right in front next to the door so got to hear him talk bad about everyone. The worst hour of my life listening to him!

I like Tasso's. It's a fun, neighborhood place full of boisterous Greeks with a very casual (though maybe a bit cafeteria-ish) atmosphere. The music, belly dancers, and plate smashing are all fun. The food here is pretty tasty. I really like their lamb chops, pita, and gyro meat, in particular. Everything else is typically done well and fairly tasty. Quality-wise, I'd say it's on par with Aladdin Cafe. The menus are a bit different, but the two are reasonably comparable Mediterranean restaurants. Service is mediocre, but that's not a huge concern to me. Where things go a bit south is the pricing. $20 a plate can buy you one hell of a meal in Kansas City, and while the food is tasty, it's not worth the cost. Again, Aladdin is roughly the same quality of Mediterranean food, but it's about 60% of the cost. For that reason, I'd advise being wary of heading to Tasso's. If you just really want the uppity Greek atmosphere along with your meal, fire away. Otherwise, there are better options at this price point and in this style of cuisine. 4 stars for food, 1.5 for pricing, and anywhere from 3-5 for atmosphere, depending on when you're there.

First visit. We arrived about 5:30 and place was almost empty. Had to wait a couple of minutes before being seated. Hummus was very salty. Gyro meat was also very salty. Service was slow. There are a few menu items that you would normally expect rice and veggies with that are specifically called out to not come with rice and veggies, which is odd. Finally, on the menu it states if you have a reservation each party on the res must purchase an entree.

Just got some take out and it was amazing. I have tried most of the menu, everything I have had has been wonderful. I brought lunch over to a friend who has just moved to the city and their exact words were "This is Bomb". I highly recommend the mousaka.

In a nutshell: poor service, outrageous prices for what you get, and just too much sensory overloading during their business evenings, which apparently happen on Saturday. The quality of the food was so-so, and clearly not worth the value of the ticket. I doubt we'll ever go again, in spite of how much I try to support local businesses.

Tassos is ok, not great, but just ok. Our waiter was extremely anxious to get our order. But once we placed the order he was nonexistent. The little starter salad came with the gyro plate. The gyro meat was good, not overly seasoned but good. The pita was fresh. The tzaiki didn't have the pop off seasonings I'm used to. Again, it was just good. I can see why it is popular with large groups and families. It is loud with conversations of people trying to talk over the overly loud music playing. The evening I was here it wasn't too full but there were several tables occupied wth large groups. Like I said, everything I had was just good. There weren't stand outs. I might go again if I was with a larger group on a Saturday night for the entertainment. But I'm not planning to go out of my way in the near future.

Food was good, service not. I have lived in KC all my life and never been here before. I've heard raving reviews but I didn't find it that great. However, I think maybe I went at the wrong time. I went by myself on a Tues night at 6pm. Nothing special going on, just three tables occupied. I did see an older man walking around but he didn't speak to me. It was not busy but the service was very slow. I didn't feel she was enthusiastic about taking my order and she took forever to bring me my check even though hardly anyone in the restaurant. She appeared to be the only one working other than someone in the back kitchen making food. They have large screen TV's broadcasting images of Greece. If it weren't for this I would have been so so bored waiting for the waitress. The prices... oh my. I about fell over when I saw the prices. I ordered a sm coke, the gyro only which came with small salad. The gyro was not a plate, it was gyro wrap only. This all came to $15 plus tip. Apparently that was their cheapest on the menu. It was very good but not worth the price. It is an older bldg so it may not seem clean but I'm sure it is. I'm sure this place is good for parties or special occasions but it's pricey.

It's really hard to write a review of Tasso's, because I'm in two places about it, having been a number of times in a number of different situations over the years. If you go on a weekend as part of a big group, you're going to have a good time. There's belly dancing, old guys with horns, ouzo, plates breaking, lining up to kiss birthday celebrants. It's just a fun time. The food is good, the people are friendly and everyone is having fun. If you go on a weeknight, maybe just two or four of you, it's a totally different vibe. Quiet. Service is a little slow and inconsistent, which you don't notice as much in a big group. And the food is still good, but holy cow, it's expensive. So, plan accordingly, and for the experience you want. Kansas City has a dearth of full-on Greek restaurants, so if that's what you're looking for, you don't have much to choose from. The food is worth the trip if you're craving Greek, but the whole experience might not be exactly what you're looking for.

This is hands down my favorite restaurant in the city. In the 15 years I've lived here this place has hardly changed and I absolutely love it for this. Why is this place so damn awesome you are wondering? Well I am going to tell you. 1. Tasso him self walking around during dinner, talking Greek into a mic that is connected to a PA. He gets the crowd in the restaurant worked up and soon everyone is raising their drinks and shouting "Opa". He also likes to get everyone drinking Ouzo shots. 2. The band. There is a 2 person band in there Th-Sat. The horn player has changed over the years, but the Neil Diamond incarnate that is the singer/keyboardist/guitar player has not. Not only does this man sound like the God that is Neil Diamond himself, but he cracks jokes throughout the dinner service about the patrons themselves. 3. Breaking Plates. For $3 you can purchase a plate and then turn around and throw it down on the dance floor, breaking it to pieces. All in the name of Good Luck. Tasso himself is known to make it rain plates at times to get people interested. 4. Belly Dancing. Now sure, the belly dancer isn't a 20 yr old hottie. But there is something fun in watching her dance around in her traditional greek garb and clanking finger cymbals together for 30 min that just gets you going. Typically she will bring guests out on to the dance floor for impromptu lessons as well. 5. The Food. This is why you go to a restaurant right? If Greek cuisine is what you want, there is no better. Also, be prepared to eat as the portions are large. This is the only restaurant in the city I have sat in for 2+ hours, spent $100 on a dinner for two, and not felt like I was cheated and got really crappy/slow service. If you haven't been here you must go. Do it on a Friday or Saturday night around 730 and go with friends. You won't regret it.

Great food...it was a packed Saturday night and the food eas great. Service was a little slow, but they did what they could. I don't think they thought it would be that busy. I had the filet ka bob that was incredibly tender. The table behind me let me try this lamb that looked like tiny pork chops that were incredible. I want to go back on a slower night to enjoy the great music with the saxophonist. Get a meal that is hot which chuck as the waiter. I can't wait to go back.

We were fan of Tasso for 10 years until tonight. Food, atmosphere, and our talented belly dance lady are still always excellent but our server is so horrible. She missed our food and we waited for our check until the restaurant close. How can this ever be possible? She finally shown up when we were sat there as the last table. She went back in with our credit card for a big while. And yes, bad enough that another server need to be the one who hand our credit card back to us and said Thank you. It was my first time here and reading all the reviews I was expecting slow/almost bad service. I got there and we had reservations for a group...I was a lil early they said tables weren't ready yet so I went to get a few drinks from the bar. Everything was fine....then when the time of our reservations rolled around our table was ready and we were seated towards the back and they said as tables cleared out we could move closer to the center if we wanted to. We didn't, we were fine where we were. Our waitress came and got drinks and such. Service was a lil slow and she wasn't the friendliest or the most enthusiastic person in the world but whatever....Our food took a while to come out but the atmosphere was fun during the wait. I love how friendly Tasso himself was....wishing people happy birthdays and buying them shots! How fun! The salad that comes w/ the entrée was amazing, I don't know what it was but it was soo good! I ordered the village salad and the gyro plate. Village salad was okay, I think I set the bar high w/ the one I had at Athena in Chicago. so that being said, I probably wouldn't order this $12 salad here again. the Gyro plate is good, the meat is very delish and the pita was good. the taziki sauce is just alright. I didn't hear anyone else in the party complain about food. Then our bills came....lets just say things didn't add up. Mine was fine. one of the other couples bill said there was $31 in drinks $30 in food and whatever the gratuity that was already adding came to a total of $90.....yeah. what? who does math here? One of the ladies complained about our waitress and said she wasn't paying gratuity. The owner "Big John" came over and sat down w/ us, took the gratuity off all our bills, brought us a gift card, and bought us a round of drinks. He kept telling us that was unacceptable wanted us back and was sorry for our service. Don't get me wrong but I was already expecting the lack of service. But it was nice of him to come over and hang our a bit. I still tipped her. But I will go back! It was a lot of fun. I love the crowd interaction of the employees!

We went early (slightly before 6) because we heard that Tasso's can get crowded. Though going early may help with the level of noise, you miss the fun that starts when the band starts playing (around 7 or 8 I believe). We started with the hummus, of course. It was delicious and they actually give you enough pita bread to enjoy with it! I typically eat a chicken kabob when I go Greek, but decided to try the Dolmathes (grape leaves stuffed with ground beef topped with egg lemon sauce). It was good, but I probably won't eat it again. (In fairness, I've never eaten the Dolmathes before so it could just not be my thing.) Of course, my meal came with a Greek salad, which is probably my favorite part of Greek cuisine. It was quite good, though the ingredients didn't seem as fresh as what I'm accustomed to. I found the décor at Tasso's interesting, though definitely dated. There aren't a lot of windows, so it's a bit dark, but quite clean and tidy. The wait staff was top notch. Always friendly and on top of things. I'd certainly go again, but probably go a bit later to enjoy the music (definitely something that adds to the Greek experience) AND I'd stick with the chicken kabob.

This place has an amazing atmosphere, we were there on a Saturday night. The band was great, but they sat us about 3 feet from the microphone. I asked to be moved to a vacant table and they accommodated my request, although it did take about 15 extra minutes and they didn't have to clean up or move anyone from that table. I found that strange, almost like they had forgot I asked. I was concerned that the belly dancer was a little to much for the little ones I had with me but they seemed to have fun. The service was painfully slow, I had to walk up to the bar to get my own drink after the waiter was gone for another 15-20 minutes. The food was okay, I've had much much much better, but the atmosphere and fun made up for the lack of quality in the food. Most things seem pre-made as they couldn't accommodate many of my requests to have a little healthier options. All in all, this place is somewhere you have to try once, but then after that I don't see much need to go back...

I am giving Tasso's 4 stars merely because of the arrogant attitude of the owner, who has gone out of his way to yell at employees in the middle of the restaurant. Aside from this, the food is fantastic. The tour of Greece dip appetizer is my personal favorite. If you want to experience good Greek food in a quaint setting, come here during the weekdays. Otherwise, it is very crowded especially during belly dancing events but will be quite entertaining.

Tassos is....well if I had to put in one word, it'd be: weird! If i had three words? REALLY f'n weird! We went here Friday night with a large group for a friends birthday. Now granted, we had been doing some pre-gaming at somebody's apartment beforehand, so I was already feeling pretty good. But it's like the first 45 minutes at Tassos were a whirlwind of crazy times. I'm breaking plates on the floor, taking shots of ouzo while kissing a line full of women. Belly dancers! Ladies passing out roses! It's all just so crazy! So crazy that we barely even noticed that we didn't even get proper drinks in that first 45 minutes. JUST KIDDING. We totally noticed. Other things I noticed: -The side of the party closest to the kitchen got about twice as many drinks as those of us unfortunate enough to be on the far end. -The rack of lamb i ordered rare (to which the server said i was "an adventurer!) came out a decidedly un-adventurous medium well. After waiting almost an hour for it to be prepared, i sucked it up and ate it. The odd thing is, I'm usually such a stickler for service, but i really didn't care at all that it was ATROCIOUS. We still had a blast. Don't come for the food or the service. Come for the ridiculous atmosphere (alternatively described by my friends as both a 3rd rate Greek Booze Cruise and also "like every night is your weird Greek great-uncle's wedding!") and just have fun.

BEST GREEK FOOD IN KANSAS CITY Tasso's Greek Restaurant is one of Kansas City's hidden culinary gems. I have never had a bad meal there. I have eaten Greek food all over the world and this is world-class Greek food without a doubt. Not only do they make things like gyros and kabobs better than any other Greek restaurant in Kansas City, they have some of the best dishes I've only had at Tasso's. Last time I ate there, I had the Pastitio, a ground beef and macaroni and cheese casserole and it was AMAZING. I go there for lunch all the time and the staff is always so extremely nice and accommodating. I have also had them cater lunch to my office and they fed the entire office without a hitch. Everybody loved it. Tasso himself (must be nearing 80 years old) is one of Kansas City's true characters and has been there taking care of every customer that walks in the door almost every time I've eaten there. I love this guy. His son is just as much a character and one of the nicest, most genuine people I have ever met. It's a true family affair and the food is literally the best Greek food I have ever put in my mouth - that's why I keep going back.

I've ate Greek food...two or three times now, but this place is a blast. We went on a Saturday night and it was packed. KU was playing on the big screen, bachelorette parties galore, old and young, you name it, they were there. I had no idea what to order, so I got the sampler. I liked everything! Next time, I'll either get the sampler again or the gyro platter. Belly dancer was great, the two guys playing music were great, and breaking the plates...OPA! Such a good time, I'll be back for sure...with a driver or a taxi!

Hands down, one of the best group-dinner restaurants in the city, esp when it is packed on a Friday or Saturday night. Ask for John next time you go - he is Tasso's son, and the defacto owner/manager. He will buy you a shot of Ouzo, and off you go.... On the weekends, there is live music, and around 9, a live belly dance show and audience-participation portion. Pretty fun for first-timers or infrequent goers, certainly. It's even more fun when Tasso is there clapping along, breaking plates and yelling at people to getup and dance! :-)

The ambiance was awful, the service was mediocre and it was more expensive than it should have been. However, I must begrudgingly report, that the food was surprisingly good. We had the Gyro salad and the Chicken salad and they were both large and fresh. The feta was bountiful as well. I was a bit disappointed that my chicken was just grilled and not skewered souvlaki like I expected.

I went to Tasso's with a Groupon and my 16-year-old son for my "birthday out" with him. I'd completely prepped him (having been there years ago) that it was a loud, boisterous place, that there would be plate-smashing and belly-dancing, and a raucous, lively evening would ensue...his first experience at a Greek restaurant would be unforgettable! What we got was nearly the opposite: a nearly-empty place when we arrived (granted, it was a Wednesday evening, but there were only a couple tables occupied). Nobody at the door, nobody to greet us, nobody to seat us...the place was so quiet you could hear a pin drop! I maneuvered my way through to the bar and kitchen, and finally found a snippy pigtailed waitress (hostess?) and simply asked, "are we supposed to seat ourselves or wait for someone?" She replied, "I was trying to get this take-out order...I'll seat you." OK then! Our waiter was excellent - he kept our glasses full and was quite knowledgeable about the menu for my inquisitive son. The food was warm and wonderful, if a bit slow to arrive. We had the hummus/pita appetizer; I had a gyro plate and my son had the "Greek lasagne" pastitio dish which he loved. Entertainment for the evening included some cheesy MIDI-type music (which, fortunately, did include "Zorba the Greek") played from a CD, followed by an excellent live guitar performance by a guy who's part lounge-singer. He did take the time to chat with us in between songs, and the small crowd did acknowledge his excellent musicianship and reasonable "background" volume. He salvaged the evening in terms of entertainment, which was good. But...no belly dancer, not a single plate smashed, no dancing, no handing out of roses, no real spirit or festive atmosphere, and a whole front-of-house with delicious looking Greek cookies but nobody to sell them -- left us hanging. I need to bring my son back again on a weekend evening, when hopefully things are a little more alive. As for this calm, delicious Wednesday evening, I'd give the food and waiter excellent marks, but probably a D- to the hostess and the way it felt like we were intruding on a silent evening by actually coming here for dinner. It sure wasn't the festive, hyper Tasso's I remember from a few years ago.

This place is AWFUL!!! I do not know how they have been in business for so long. 2 couples for dinner, squeezed in at a very small table. Ordered hummus which was mediocre at best, Holy Land's hummus blows theirs away. Also ordered their specialty flaming cheese. Big let down. Do not waste your money. It is just cheese that is set on fire so it is melted. Our waitress was great. Very helpful and friendly. We loved her. When she brought our dinners out she lost her balance and proceeded to dump an entire plate of food on my husbands lap. Accidents happen. He got cleaned up but the manager (or maybe owner??) proceeded to scream at the waitress just out of sight but not out of earshot. He berated her for 10 minutes! It was embarrassing for everyone. He did NOT however come by our table or offer us any thing for compensation, not even a free dessert. The food was okay, certainly not worth the trip from Jo Co. Holy Land is way better. Because we really like our waitress we didn't say anything the manager about not comping anything because he'd probably fire her. It was ridiculous! Needless to say we will NEVER be back.

It would be hard for me to give any Greek restaurant more than 3 stars, so this 3 star is probably like a 4 star... maybe. : ) To start, I like southern food of this type better. Like Israel, Palestine, etc. I like their hummus better and the spicing better. So, we just do the saganaki and Greek Super Combo. The Saganaki was good... but too much lemon. Don't let them squeeze the whole wedge on the plate if you are sensitive to lemon flavor. The combo had the following items: Tiropita... awesome mild feta in filo. My favorite thing here. Gyro meat.... about as good as anywhere. Tzatziki... excellent and my second favorite thing here. Mousaka... very good, and rich beyond measure. A great winter dish. Pastitio.... also very good and not too heavy handed on the cinnamon in the meat, which spoils this dish at some places. The pita was not so good. Papu's has pita down. The best. Period. So... I'd go back for a Tiropita for sure. Maybe Mousaka in the winter. They just put a patio with a nice pergola and lights out back. If you want to eat outside, as we did, it is very nice. Opa!

The meals range from $15-30. We didn't go when they had entertainment so I can't speak to that. The decor is outdated. Will I go back again? Not if I can find comparable food in a better price range.

Dear Yelp fam, you know I only write when it's really amazingly good, or tragically bad. In this case I am proud to bring a KC local establishment to light. I had this at an office event which was catered by Tasso's a couple weeks ago and had to ask the secretary where she ordered from. Then on a quiet Tuesday we decided to stop in and try the chicken kabob and gyro first hand. It was FRIGGIN AMAZING. It is hard to glorify pita bread yes I know, but literally the best pita bread in. the. world. I am on a paleo diet or Mediterranean diet, so this was perfect (but I did splurge on the pita). If you like chicken you have to try the chicken kabob (must try). The chicken is so darn... moist (I hate that word) that you will take a bite out of it, and then look at it in awe. The gyro meat is tender but has that light char on the outside and when coupled with the white tzaziki (sp) sauce is off the charts. I've heard about people coming here for the atmosphere on the weekends (I did see a pile of Greek plates), but we came and enjoyed a casual weekday. Highly Reco!

I started this review more than 6 months ago and never finished it, because I didn't want to remember that exhausting night. The service was appalling on every level, from making a reservation (which they didn't even honor. We were there just before our reservation time and still had to wait behind the 4+ parties ahead of us), to the server (just clueless and scattered. We tried to flag him down several times when he walked right by the table and we had no luck, parts of our order were forgotten, don't even hope for any refills) to the slow, sloooow food that was not even mediocre.) Those are only a couple highlights. There was nothing good about this experience. You couldn't pay me to waste another night here. Gordon Ramsey would have a field day.

If you are visiting KC or you live here, and you have never experienced Tasso's..you must go. You will feel ilke you're lost when you get there...but worth the trip. Seriously, get authentic greek food and lots of it. Plus OUZO!!! and plenty of that as well. Not only will you get great food, but you will get entertainment, a belly dancer AND best of all, you get to BREAK DA PLATES!! yes, the entire restaurant as the opportunity to dance around the dance floor and smash plates into the ground. We have typically always gone with a group of people....but bring your party friends for a great evening. It is not just dinner out...it is entertainment you will remember for a long tim.

My son requested Greek food for his Birthday celebration, good choice. We ordered the special package which included an appetizer ( gyro meat, tzatziki sauce and pita),small Greek dinner salad, and your choice of any entree(5$ up charge for the Rack of lamb) for 20$. We had the Corinthian lamb chops, rack of lamb, Dolmathes, and the Chicken Kabob. The lamb was fabulous, tender flavorful, no gamy taste at all. This was the best lamb I've had anywhere. The show was fun, with free Uzo shots for those celebrating. The belly dancer was great fun, adding extra value to the meal.

We went on a Saturday night, with 7 adults and 2 children. We knew it would probably be loud and busy, but we weren't expecting what we walked into. They placed us at a back table, at first. Unfortunately, the door down the hall led outside to the "smoking" patio. 2 of our party are allergic, so the draft when smokers would walk into the restaurant was overwhelming. They moved us very quickly to the front of the restaurant. Which would have been fine, if the music hadn't been several decibels too loud. My ears are still ringing. I couldn't talk to the person across the table and good luck trying to speak to anyone further than 1 seat away from you. The service was OK. The prices are not worth it. The food was good, but not *that* good. $16 for a gyro plate (no rice, no veggies). I better have enough for lunch leftovers (or exceptional service), and neither was the case. The owner was very loud and obnoxious (seeming to berate many of the servers & the musicians). We left before the belly-dancer started, as we simply could not deal with the loud music any longer. Did I mention that my ears are still ringing? The negative trifecta of price, ambience, and quality is such that I will never go back.

Here I go with the Groupons again. Hey listen! I'm addicted and I've gotten such a lot of good deals from Groupons. I've never been to Tasso's before so this was going to be a treat. And, I had heard so many good things about it. So, we piled into the Caddy and trolled down Wornall at lightning speed because as usual, we were running a late dinner on a Saturday night. When we arrived, it didn't look overly crowded, just busy. When we got inside? It was noisy and raucous and loud and very, very busy. I thought they were having a private party and we did have to stand and wait an uncomfortably long period of time before someone finally noticed us and hailed a server to come greet us. I asked if they were having a private party and the server said they were not but it took him a moment to locate a good place for us to sit. It turned out to be a nice booth which had a good view for me but not my dining companion. When the belly dancer flounced out onto the stage, my dining companion and I were relieved that we were tucked a bit out of the way. I'm all for having a good time with the crowd and performers, etc., but tonight was supposed to be just a pleasant, tasty dinner of something unusual for the both of us. Listen, these people were getting up and shaking those booties on the dance floor and an older fellow was getting on a microphone and hollering stuff out to the crowd, kind of like at a Greek wedding. I thought it looked like a lot of fun. My dining companion became annoyed by the loudness and the commotion. Oh well, different strokes I guess. We ordered the package deal which was the Pikilia (appetizers) and a main course. The pikilia had gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, spanakopita and tiropita and pita bread. Their tzatziki sauce is the bomb! It is so creamy and flavorful with the fresh cucumber flavor. Just heaven! The gyro meat was nice and tasty but some of it was a bit dry. The spanakopita (spinach and feta wrapped in filo) and tiropita (feta wrapped in filo) were good. For dinner, I ordered the Super Combination which was Gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, pastitsio and pita served with onions and tomato. My dining companion ordered the Gryo Plate which was basically just more gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, pita bread, onions and tomato. All the food was good but the pastitsio was probably some of the best I've had in a while. It seems like Tasso's may make their own noodles but I'm not sure. The meat is delicately flavored with just a touch of cinnamon and other spices and topped with that custardy, creamy topping. Quite delightful! The service was not the best. I know it was because the place was busy and the servers were streteched thin but I think our server only came over the minimal number of times and it was always a very quick affair. He didn't even bother to present us with our bill. He sent someone else. That's not really a point of contention to me it's just one of those little things that kind of get your atteniton, you know? Nothing that would make me reconsider coming back or telling people something bad. There's nothing bad to tell about Tasso's. It's fun, it's cute, the food is good, the servers are hot, the belly dancer is cute and personable, everyone seemed nice. We will definitely be back.

Belly dancing? Plate breaking? Live music? Delicious food? Shenanigans? Count me in! This place was a BLAST! A group of my friends and I went here to celebrate my birthday! It was my second time ever at Tasso's and I had a great time on both occasions. To start off the evening we ordered the saganaki (flaming cheese), Tour of Greece appetizer sampler, and Greek wine. The waitress lit the cheese table side and the flames nearly hit the ceiling! Awesome! The belly dancer that performs at Tasso's has been there for years and also does shows at Caspian Bistro in OP. I wish I could move like that! After taking beginning belly dancing, I can barely even do a correct shimmy. For the entrees, my fiancee tried the vegetarian kabob and I ordered a Village Salad that contained huge blocks of feta cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, sprinkles of parsley, and an olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar dressing. Delicious! My non-vegetarian friends enjoyed their entrees as well and they were all huge. Before the waitress brought out our entrees, she gave us each a side salad. After the appetizers and salad we were already quite full. The waitress also insisted that I order a dessert since it was my birthday so I got the Greek custard. She brought it out with a lit candle which was a cute touch and didn't charge us for the dessert. If you're celebrating a special day here and you're shy...well tough it out! The emcee will call you on stage. I joined the other people celebrating their birthdays on stage and got kissed on the cheek by the lone birthday boy based upon the emcee's orders. When it was the girls' turn to kiss the boy, I politely declined and said I was engaged. Turns out he was too and his fiancee was filming and scowling in the background. LOL! Plates cost $3 each and they get people on stage to break them in unison. Ah massive destruction. What's not to love? In addition to plates, they also go around selling roses and take photos of each couple in an effort to hawk these items to you. I just wish more people had been on stage dancing. Toward the end of the night, I got tired of sitting and dragged my fiancee on the stage. We had fun being the lone couple dancing and showcasing our newfound swing dancing skills thanks to our dance lessons in preparation for the wedding. The lack of dancing soon changed when a group of girls hopped off from a party bus, swarmed the dance floor, and basically took over the whole restaurant. What I assume to be the bachelorette even got up on a table and started dancing with the original owner. I highly recommend Tasso's for a fun, unique experience! OOPA!

Couldn't wait to take my Greek family to this place when they were in town. We called ahead on New Year's Day to make a reservation - as we heard this place can get packed - and got there when it opened just to make sure we didn't have to stand in line forever. Not only were we the only people there at its opening, we were the only people for the bulk of our 2-hour visit. This was especially surprising because I have heard so much about how their entertainment and belly dancing is well paired with their food. Unfortunately we didn't see any of that. I was tempted to start throwing plates of my own by the end of the visit, as the whole encounter was just a little off. The service was pretty lame - especially weird since we were the only people there! The food was OK, though the bulk of my family said that Grandma makes it better. The saganaki (flaming cheese) was decent, though underwhelming. I got a Veggie Platter of sorts and couldn't believe how much I was charged for so little food. The Greek salad was boring and mute in taste. The baklava was MINIATURE compared to its price. The facility here is interesting, and judging from how much there were still cleaning up from the night before, I am sure it can promise a good time. I was getting sick of the looped Greek tourist DVD being played on the TV behind us. Wondering if I have to be a heavy drinker to really enjoy this place, because being with my Greek family in this Greek restaurant didn't seem true to the intention of the place.

I love to go to Tasso's even though I've never really had a GREAT time there. The food is good, but never spectacular, the prices are a little hefty for what you get and the pink ouzo they pass off on the american hicks is pretty awful. Still, if you come on a weekend night, there's always music and dancing and plate throwing, and mean old man Tasso yelling at everyone to clap. I'm sure in it's heyday this place was about as good as it gets. People now a days expect more. And like the other Greek places in KC, no seafood on the menu, which is so incredibly odd for a culture that lives on the mediterean sea. don't you think? I'll be going to greece next year, and from what I hear most of the big towns have restauraunts like this one, but with seafood on the menu. I will continue to go to Tasso's until something better comes along. I just love the place.

Very "Greek Family" atmosphere. Dance floor. 2-man band with backing tracks playing popular Greek, Jewish, and Middle-Eastern songs. Even threw in some 80's songs which was great. People dancing, smashing dishes. I mean, wow! Arrived without a reservation. Food was great, service was incredible. Just had an awesome time.

Went here for my father's birthday and we had SO MUCH FUN! Breaking plates, dancing, taking shots of ouzo- we didn't want to leave! I suggest the flaming cheese, which they set on fire at your table! I had the house favorite- lamb dish, which was very good. I would suggest going here. It's very loud and the belly dancer is a lot of fun too! It's like a wedding party haha! Outside looks very nice- they have a patio in front and back. Staff was all so friendly and helpful.

My (now ex) wife and I arrived at Tassos in Waldo on a recent Friday night promptly at five o'clock. We were not greeted, and generally felt we were inconveniencing the staff, that appeared to be getting ready for a large group. Other than our server, who was very professional and pleasant, the entire staff acted like they were awaiting their anti depressant shipment. What infuriated us most was the arrogant, dismissive attitude of the owner and manager (as idenified by our server). The food was not to the level of Mr. Gyros. A tremendous disappointment! I hope your experience is better than ours, but as I told the manager as we left: "We are sorry to have inconvenienced you by coming tonight...." I have NO idea how this place has the reputation that it does.

I have been meaning to visit this restaurant for YEARS, based on all the fun stories I'd heard my friends tell. Finally, it took a Groupon to get me through the front doors. I actually bought two Groupons so I could take a group of four. I was joined by my two teenage sons and my oldest son's girlfriend. I was pretty excited about introducing them to Greek cuisine with atmosphere to match. Unfortunately, we got nothing of the sort. We went on Friday night and, even though the place was not busy, the host asked us if we had a reservation. It had not dawned on me to make one so I asked if that was a problem. He said no. We were seated at a four top table on the upper level. Three full pitchers of ice tea sat on the railing next to our table and when my younger son was seated, he had to be very careful not to move. Otherwise, he could have easily knocked the pitchers off. I mentioned this to our server and he said "Well, I would appreciate it if you DIDN"T knock them off". I assured him that if one of them was knocked off, it would definitely be an accident and, to lighten the mood, I told him we'd just holler "Opa!" if we did. He did not find any humor in that nor did he offer to move the pitchers. My son's girlfriend is a vegetarian; she ordered the gyros plate but asked him to hold the meat. In a very condescending manner, he told her that there would be nothing on the plate if she did not have the meat. He could have easily asked her if she'd like more cucumber or tomatoes instead (it certainly wouldn't have been cost prohibitive to do that) but I guess that never dawned on him. I ordered the combo platter. About 15 minutes later, he walked by our table and said he couldn't remember what I had ordered! When we finally got our meals, I asked him which food was the pastitio. It was very dark and I couldn't tell what I was eating. He said "It's the one that you can visibly see the noodles" and walked off. About 5 minutes later, I realized my water glass had a rather big chip on the rim. Obviously I didn't want to cut my lip so I flagged him over to see if he would change the glass. He took it without a word and never brought me anything else to drink, including another glass of water. I was parched and finally had to ask another server to bring me another glass. The atmosphere left a lot to be desired. They had a terrible singer who played nothing but Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, and Kenny Rogers. Not exactly the belly dancing, plate breaking, Zorba's dance that I was looking forward to. Food was edible but certainly nothing to write home about. We were not offered desserts at all. Needless to say, we won't be back.
